As you all probably know, a sprag clutch for an 880 or 770 lists at about $407. It is rated for 70 hp or so. The sprag clutch for the O/U pack for the 2-105, 4-210, etc., is slightly narrower but the same diameter and lists for $193. It is rated for 200 hp. It fits exactly. That is what I will be putting in my 880 that I just got dissasembled.

We have a 880 that we play with a bit. The power booster has worked well since we reshimmed clutch pack, until this past summer at a tractor pull my son had the overrunning sprag let go when shifting into low. We have pulled several times since and it has worked fine, however we are allways leary that it will happen again. I am worried that if he does not get the main clutch released prior to sprag grabbing on again that it will wreck something? Any suggestions on what would have caused it to slip?? Tractor is a diesel which we have rebuilt pretty well stock, but we had the pump done and have it turned up so we are probably pushing 70 h.p. Could this be the problem that we are too close to the capacity of the spragg??

I think you may want to take a look at the torque capacities of the O R clutches and how they are used. As I remember the power booster sprague sees the full torque of the engine multiplied by the gear ratio reduction, the one on the O U only has to hold the reaction torque of the planetary, so it sees much lower torque. I would think that a narrower clutch woud have less torque capacity unless it has more spragues. Also filtered oil and pressure lube made a big difference on life of those units. Harry

OK, good points. I'll certainly keep them in mind. The difference in width was so small as to be unnoticeable without looking carefully. Tom at O'Brien County Implement says there are some out and they haven't quit yet.

Where did these ratings come from? Clutches are rated in foot pounds or torque.

Got them from Tom at O'Brien County Implement. Interesting to know the torque rating.

In my opinion that was one of the problems especially with the 880 diesel, farmers would let them pull doen to far and then shift to low placing a larger than normal torque load on the Power Booster. Look at your long PTO shaft, the one that comes from the engine It is smaller than the output shaft. It has to transmitt the same Horse Power, but since it runs 3 times faster than the PTO output shaft, The torque load is only 1/3 of the output. If horse power stays the same and speed goes up torque loads decrease. One thing that will help your cause you probably are not going to work the tractor hard. Harry is corect. All you need to do is keep that planetary from turning. If I remember correctly the original TA on the Super M were that way. Kind of think how a planetary gear set works.

Jim, I certainly would like to hear how well it works out. I have an 880 that I need to rebuild the Power Booster in. Have you rebuilt the Power Booster yet? Any problems? Have you had a chance to test it? What is the AGCO part number for the sprag clutch you are using?

Thank you,
A.P.

I haven't put it back together yet and probably won't get around to it for another couple of weeks. I don't have the part number in front of me, but it is the same as the O/U sprag clutch. Starts with a 7.
