I must live in a bubble.
Trying to find some good assembly grease to put together my Sherman Transmission following John Smith's instructions. None of my local auto parts stores have "assembly grease" and just cock their head sideways at me.
Can't I just use petroleum jelly or the light EP lithium grease I bought? The Cleavite assembly lube I used on the engine seams light for transmission gears and the CRC stuff my local Oreilly's has doesn't tell me much other than it is lithium based also.
Probably a dumb "what does it matter" picky question but thought I'd throw it out there. TIA.

A high priced auto machine shop near me uses motor oil. They said that the chance of a glob of grease blocking a tight passage is too high.

Any light, creamy grease, or heavy oil, it doesn't matter what you use. Just so it's not assembled dry.

I'm good on the engine, looking for suggestions on the Sherman I'm reassembling.
Want to know if I can use the Lithium based EP grease I already have or if I need something else.

When I use to fool with small engines a lot I used STP oil treatment--never a problem..Still have some just in case I decide to rebuild just one more..or two..

I use motor oil are what ever lube I am going to put back in it...

I have used wheel bearing grease on bearings but have read it could stave the bearing for oil... I could see it if you packed the bearing on some applications.. A light coat of what ever you are going to add to the sump should give you the proper oil and not affect the set up when you set the pre-load...

Out of High School I asked the old timers what they used for assembly. The response was, Lubriplate NO. 105 Motor Assembly Grease. It comes in a 10 oz tube, like a big tube of tooth paste.

Just bought a tube a year or so back. NAPA should have it...?

Mdparrott, You can use thick heavy wheel bearing grease or something like this M465SG Smart Blend Green Transmission Assembly Lube.Engine assembly lube is to thin and won't hold the parts in place.

NAPA stores have their own brand of assembly lube which is actually a Sta-Lube product, Comes in a tube.
