earlier I posted a problem with my N about it's killing after it was warmed up. Thanks to many who responded. I took the advise of cleaning the fuel filter and checking the fuel flow as advised. I thought I had it figured out when I test drove it until I started pulling a slight hill and the tractor began to surge until it finally killed. Once again I played with the choke when this happened and it only seemed to prolong the inevitable. My next try was going to be the coil, but before I start throwing parts at it I wanted to ask if anyone else had an opinion. Is this a symptom of a coil going bad? Thanks for all the great advise!

Yes it sounds like the coil. It will run alright for a little while and then spit and sputter and generally act like a fuel problem! Is it the original coil? Replace it! It's a shame they only last fifty years! Also, buy the coil from your friendly New Holland Dealer. You will get the best price there (about $33). Hope this helps!

As I said in the message that I posted last time you posted , I bet it is the coil , it is easy to tell when it happens, just pull off one of the plug wires and put another plug on it and crank. when it has no or very weak spark replace the coil. It is alot easier than carb or fuel work ( as I said in my last post ) but it's to late for that. If you are only using it to plow snow maybe it will be cold enough to keep the coil from heating up and you can get by for a little longer but a coil heats up and goes away. If you get a new coil and it's made in Korea , expect to replace it every 6 months. I'll bet you a case of beer that if you replace the coil your problem is over.

I don't recall reading your other post, so I don't know what you posted earlier, but if you have changed the plug wires at all, check to make sure you have the plug wires going to the right plugs. Surprisingly enough the tractor will run reasonalbly good with plug wires with 2 and 3 backwards. The firing order is ccw 1243. I had similar problems, tried everything until finding out wrong rotation of plug wires, mine would run fine as long as I didn't have to climb hills. Changed to correct rotation and took off like a shot been running fine ever since. Good luck. Stan

I had a problem with my 9n last winter when it would do about the same thing? I was lucky and it quit totaly,(after I had rebuilt the carb ect)it turned out to be the key switch, you can either check the voltage,to the coil or just jump around the switch and test it? I was getting less then 1 volt to the coil. Its ceaper then a coil, mike

Jon,

I'm no expert, but usually the coil is either good or not. There is usually no warning when they go. I'd continue to check the fuel system. Have you cleaned the carburetor and checked the float setting? Make sure the needle valve into the carburetor is clean, too. Sounds like you're starving for gas. Check the strength of the spark also. Clean all electrical connections (battery, coil, ballast resistor, etc.), as dirty terminals can weaken spark. Just some thoughts. Good luck.

Ron

I'd second the opinion on the fuel system. Even if you clean out the sediment bulb, filter and fuel line, the movement of the tractor may be sending tank sedment into the intake time after time.
