Dead short or open ground mabe. See if the battery got a internal dead short. Check starter wires ground connections and the ignition switch. The ignition switchs do go bad. Good luck, mabe its time you this problem to the wife to justify buying a spare, rebuilt 8N unit just in case one breaks.

You mention that the head lights went off before the engine died. This sounds like an alternator problem to me.It would be interesting to know what it turns out to be.I remember having to drive with the lights off to keep the engine from dying when my alternator failed.

Bill, First things, you don't need you lights or
ALT/Gen for the Tractor to Start or Run. I would
trouble shoot by dis-connecting the AlT/Gen and
your lights, and then make sure the Battery was charged. Your problem may be that the "coil is fried"(inductive over load) and your should
just make sure that your have a working Ignition system using the normal trouble shooting methods.

Hope this helps,

You need to purchase a good test light with a sharp probe on one end and a good aligator clamp on the other and then start looking and testing untill you find where you have lost the juice.
I would start at the large accessory wire that comes off the starter solenoid at the point where the hot (negative) battery cable connects and chase it to each point further down the circuit as it braches out like a tree. You have lost a connection somewhere.

I bet its your battery cables..wiggle the connections to the battery, see if your lights come on..I was mowing my 5 acres one day and everything just dies, it was corroded cables..

it seems like the lights would have stayed on and the tractor continue to run form the alternator, is that right, the starter turns over good, but engine never fires up. will try cables anyway

must have read your first post wrong, are your lights hooked into the ignition switch?..like they only go on when the switch is on?..this would explain your lights going off when the tractor died..if this is the case than the switch went bad..will crank and crank but never start..

that sounds like the right answer to me, yes my lights are hooked to my switch and it is just like when i try to crank it with the switch in the wrong position. I'll give it a try in the morning, don't think new neighbor's wife would appreciate me trying to crank a tractor so late at night.

My first guess would be that your lights draw enough current that they drained your battery even with the engine running. Now you don't have enough juice to do anything.

I would pull the battery and check it out. You can try charging it, but it might be fried if you left the lights on when it was already low.

guess by now you pulled a plug wire stuck a screwdriver in it and grounded it to the block cranked it over and looked to see if you had a big fat spark (or stick a spare plug in there and check the spark.) no spark, then start backtracking the wires. got a voltmeter? see if your'e getting juice to the coil. no juice, check the resistor up by the ignition switch. the process of elimination is a real pain sometimes :-(
