Ol Reliable still runs well but has been leaking oil out the oil breather for some time and I have low compression.....55-60#'s in all cylinders. The N starts like a champ but I believe the rings are ready for a makeover which will mean it is time to make some space in the garage and perform some surgery. I am guessing i will find the normal things when the engine is taken apart and will purchase a rebuild kit from this site. What dollar amount should I budget for after I have the motor torn apart? I am guessing $1400. Am I a bit low? Hopefully this will be more fun than expensive.

Keep in mind this tractor had been restored when it came to me and had a professional paint job that we had to match.... I did it to cheap but it was fun,,,,

Fill in the blanks are delete what you will not need are can do yourself,,, this one had a diagnostic charge ($80.00) added to the in-house labor because if a issue that lead to a engine rebuild. The wiring and 12V conversion was ratty so I took care of that. No clutch are axle pin work needed...Oil pump rebuild was covered in my labor ...

I'd run it til it quits & part it out. A lotta guys need original parts to keep theirs going.

You could easily sink $2000 in an $800 tractor, only to wind up with an $1800 tractor.

WOOOOO I cant find any previous post from you on this subject. Have I missed something? I had the exact same thing on a 46 2N. The low compression and oil coming out of the sump is possibly due to blowby caused by stuck rings. You need to do the MMO or automatic tranny fluid soak. Its cheap and easy and could save you time and $$$$. All my compression checks started at 30 and I brought up 45, 60,90 and above. Do you want to try it? Checks archives for the handle old he will give you the methods on it.

Maybe prices differ by area. I paid 1000 for machine work and a full rebuild kit that he ordered. Clutch was another 100 or so. The machine shop did sleeves, connecting rods, new freeze plugs, decked the block and head, new ring gear installed, new oil pump, turned the crank, new valve seats. All we did was plasti guage and check tolerances and assemble. He did and excellent job.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Your baseline cost is roughly $500 for a COMPLETE overhaul kit that includes new sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings, valves, springs, guides, oil pump kit, gaskets, plugs, hoses, belts, etc. That leaves you $900 for machine shop charges and any "extras" you might need or want. Crankshaft grinding and professional block cleaning are a must in my book - figure an additional $200 for that. New engine has to have a new water pump - $50. Add a new clutch and freshly surfaced flywheel while you are at it for another $250 and you still have $450 headroom in your budget. Any additional machine shop work you need will eat into that pretty quickly but you are in the neighborhood with your estimate.

That $1400 might cover a basic overhaul but not a full rebuild. Things like machine shop work and having the sleeves removed and installed etc etc add up very fast.
Shoot just a sleeve kit is around $500 and that does not cover rod and main bearings and having the crank checked and turned etc.

Sounds like a rebuild is in the near future. The price depends on how good you are at avoiding mission creep. $1,400 is not a bad budget for just an engine rebuild as long as the block is not cracked or the head needing to be replaced. I have rebuilt three and none have cost less than $2,500. I am not good at avoiding mission creep.

I've never paid more than $1200 for the whole 9 yards. Parts labor and machine shop work. I pull the engine and pick it up. My neighbor just did his 1950 8N for $1500 because he needed a crankshaft. So $1400 is a good estimate for my part of the world.
