I'd assume I have some moisture in my steering box as when I drove it before the big below 0 freeze up here it steered fine. Last weekend I figured i'd drive it around a bit and it steered hard both r and l. the right side freed up within a few back and forth r and l with the steering wheel. turning l got a little better however I cant turn it as far. once the shop gets freed up were going to get it in there to thaw out and rebuild the lift, to fix the draft control not working problem. So i'd like to know if there is a way to drain the steering box? Thanks

These steering boxes can take in water.Theres a skirt under the steering wheel that keeps rainwater out of the steering tube.Theres no drain on the box so you will have to loosen a side plate to drain the box.If water has gotten into the box you will see it.It dosent mix and turn milky like a hydraulic system oil.If you see a gap between the steering wheel skirt and the top of the steering tube water can get in.Ive added a piece of straight radiator hose to the skirt and put a gear clamp on to keep it in place. Some new steering wheels come with out the skirt so water will get into the steering box.The top bearing runs directly on the steering shaft and wears the shaft when the bearing fails. This makes the shaft rise up when the proper gasket are used to adjust the box. This steering box is one of Fords dimmer ideas.I put a soft grease in the box on my 640.I would rather have the box off the tractor to work on it.Theres a welch plug in the bottom of the box that could be pushed out by ice.The plug could rust thru if water has been in the box for a long time.If there is any up and down movement when turning the wheel the top bearing is failing. The top bearing race is a stinker to get out because sheet metal blocks access to driving it out.I ground a notch in a long punch.Ruins it for other work.It could be that Dufus put some 140 gear oil in the box.

any heater would help thaw it out. you will still have the moisture in it tho, if that is the problem.

Put a heat lamp on it overnight and see what happens!

I don't have a heat lamp either and I don't live there. Tractors are at my Mil's farm. How about sticking a magnetic heater on it like ones they make for oil pans in cars? I'll be out there most of the day tomorrow so can try that

sure.. flip tractor over and shake after top is off.

:)

questions.

any rise or fall of the steerig wheel when steering lock to lock? if yes.. you have thrust paly and should rebuild the box.

if no, and steering is easier after thaw, then there are a variety of things you COULD do.

me? I'd celan the box with solvent.. drain.. and check it then lube.. otherwise you could pop the top and suction her out then relube with some 0 or 00 ep grease..e tc

No movement up or down on the steering wheel. To drain it do after thawing I'd assume I have to pull the steering box?

got a suction gun or a syphon pump? if yes.. then just getting into the box thru a cover would do it....

I don't have either one. All I've got is some rubber hose of all sizes and a bulb (like one would use to syphon gas). Would that work to stick some small hose in the filler hole and suck it out? Or remove steering wheel and stick hose down that? Sorry for the dumb ?'s. I was hoping no to have to remove the steering box if I don't have to.

I'm unfamiliar with both covers. I've never had one apart. Is the sector cover on the side where the steering arm is and a person would adjust the tightness of the steering? If so is there a gasket under it? And if I take it off do I need to mark it to align it again? What is the top cover?
