I just bought a used VHS video camera with the express purpose of taping the sandblasting, painting and reassembly of my 8N. I have to remove the steering box again to install new seals, so I'll tape that process too. What else do I need to videotape(about the tractor...)so I can sell copies to you guys? Axle seals and brakes, hydraulic system, tune-up(side-mount only at this time, sorry), carb rebuild... what's left?

I think it is a good idea.Be prepared for a lot more work than you think.I made a few science videos like bill nye the science guy and I had hours in only a few minutes of finished product. The editing is long and boring. You will learn
how to stop the camera and keep it rolling at times to save time on the editing. With practice
you should become good at it..... ....

good luck..... .....

Great idea! You can't get too basic for me. Mebee there are a few others out dere who are in need of basic termonology...(winged logo on headlight...wha??? when do you put a decal on the fender...some have 'em and some don't...basic differences between the three models? electrical troubleshooting seems like a popular topic...and all other basic stuff the some of us ask) or mebee that could be for another video project. "FORD N's for Dummies!" (that would be me)

What is second nature for experienced N'ers is good basic info for guys like me.

Good luck!

Someone (I don't remember who) posted a couple of weeks ago to say simply that Dell was unavailable and would be back sometime in the future. No details were given.

Bob, How about a 12V conversion rewire. Seems to be an awful lot of intrest in it. Mine's already converted but thought a lot of others would like to see it in the flesh, or at least on tape.

Since I'm not a fan of the 12 volt conversion, I'll have to find a volunteer or maybe I'll buy a front-mount N to convert.

Buy an entire tractor just to convert it so you can make a video of the procedure to sell? Sounds like you ought to be able to write off the entire cost of the tractor and video production costs. Wind up with a net loss on your income tax 1040 (pay fewer taxes) and have another N to play with....not a bad plan.

...ya gotta have some way to rationalize it to the spouse. I've been toying with the idea of buying a 9/2N or earlier 8N to hot-rod. How's this sound: "Sweetie, I've got a lot of guys who want a video of a 12 volt conversion and I found a great little 2N for around $1500. I only have to sell 75 tapes at $20.00 to break even..." Think she'll buy it?

I don't know about her, but you sold me...makes perfect sense. btw a 1944 2N sold here at auction last week for $1100. Good tires, seemed to run good, lots of dimples and a horrible 3 spray can paint job (runs on the tires, etc).

A lot of things come to mind, aside from those already mentioned...

...like how to get that king pin bushing out. After I pounded mine out, my brother-in-law told me three easier ways to do it.

...how to tighten up those lift arm pins that stick out under the axles and like to leak when they get loose. Those axle trumpets weigh a ton, almost and maneuvering them back onto the studs is a trick.

...how to pull the pitman arms off the steering box shafts without grinding down a gear puller in the process.

...how to get a professional looking paint job on the N after the rebuild using $37.99 worth of equipment and paint.

...and, yep, how to convince the spouse that all that time and expense is REALLY "necessary".

But I've seen your work in the forum and I know you'll do a first-rate job.

Good luck.

Don't have any spouse problems. I guess she figures my 8N(and all of my other hobbies) keeps me close to home and keeps me out of trouble. Just keep her supplied with Moon Pies and RC Cola...

I've got the J&D tapes. A couple of things they don't cover that might be helpful: Closeup of where to look for serial # on block and other production number stamps on other parts.Maybe a couple of hard start scenarios where you troubleshoot by eliminating various possibilities.Steering Assembly rebuild/repair.6 to 12 volt conversion. I know you don't need to do all these things, just throwing out some ideas. It would be great to get Claus to collaborate with you on some common electrical problems. Look forward to seeing your tape.

I have a friend who is loaning me his editing console, so I can do fancy tricks and generate titles, etc. The cost of the tapes will depend on demand. The more I can sell, the less I have to charge. It will be less than what a professionally-produced tape would be. As soon as I get my scripts finished and have time to edit, I'll be better able to estimate price. Probably less than $20.00.

I'll have to wait on that until my transmission messes up. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, or if I try to fix it, it'll be broke fer sure. Maybe someone close by has a tranny that needs overhauled. If they do, I can help and tape the process.
