I've had my '49 8N for about 8 years. It came without a tool box. About 6 years ago I purchased a tool box on ebay and sat it on the shelf. Several times I've been using the tractor and needed tools - but no tool box. So this afternoon I decided to remedy the situation. The captive nut was still in the steering column, but it looked pretty rusty. Out came the 5/16's course tap and it was ready. The battery box was after market, so no captive nut there. Scrounged around and found a suitable 5/15 bolt and nut. Could not get my fat fingers behind the air cleaner to start the nut - so off came the air cleaner. Got the tool box tightened down and ended up having to remove the carb to reattach the air tube to the carb and air cleaner. What should have been at most a 15 min job took about 45 min. Now I know why the tool box sat on the shelf for 6 years!

Since we're on the subect of tool boxes...
I don't like having a tool box ratteling around on my fender.
So I made a plate that slips under the fender.
Quiet!

I always love the ingenuity that people on this forum come up with but I still have to say that my ammo (tool) box does not rattle.
In the end, it only matters if you are happy with whatever you do.

I just removed the fenders off of an MF-20 which was given to me. One of the fenders had a tool box mounted on it. The fender had a hole almost the size of the tool box from rust due to collecting tree debris. I don't do much body work but had to fix it. I decided to mount one on the plate as you have shown. That seems like a much better idea.

That they are, got one for saw tools, two for truck chains, one for truck tow chain. And several for ammo. Just find no need to put a tool box on any of my tractors. :D

Me either-don"t use the tractor-crank it every few months-really just something in the way but don"t use it so it don"t break down, so no need for tools on it..... .Really I do wish I had an original 2N tool box--why not??

It's not so much the tools. In mine there are spare lynch pins, cotter pins, wire, various nuts and bolts, pins, electrical tape and other stuff. These are things that can get lost or broken and the spares keep me from walking back to the house. Just the usual stuff that's handy to have when you're on a tractor.

I find that most tools left in a tractor tool box, end up rusty here in Oregon. I only got 10 acres so never am I too far from the shop and don't remember the last time I had to walk back to get a tool. The tool box off of my 508n is on the shelf in my shop. If I ever sell the tractor Will throw in the tool box.

Ford engineers put some tool boxes where if you never needed a tool they were good spots. My purest restored 2Ns tool box is on the left side under the hood where the lid hood and hand must jockey for position that is where Ford put it. . Some tool boxes were mounted above the bell housing area so that you can like the 1 on my 2N can reach in and feel for what ya want. When I restore a N I do like Ford did on some Ns. I have done on all my working Ns tool boxes get mounted on the fenders. No buyer has ever complained.

Also just wanted to add that if you use SMV mounts to attach your tool box gravity will hold it down on your tractor and when you want to you can just lift/slip it off and take it with you. (so people dont steal your tools or if you need your tools but dont need the whole tractor)

Well, nobody will believe me because I can't find the pic, BUT, my pal that still has a 2N that he got in the 60's bolted a Craftsman tool box right down the ridgeline of the hood (offset to one side of course). It was(is) one of those general purpose boxes with no tray, just a padlock hasp closure that he uses a clip/dog collar thingy on. === honest, I will try and get a pic, it's a hoot !

Aftermarket battery trays suck! My husbands buddy bought one. None of the holes lined up! Had to do some mods. And it still didn't fit right. Finally he bougb one off eBay and bam fit like a charm. I will never buy repop parts if I don't have to! They suck!!!

Here's a simple solution for a tool box. My 8N has a FEL so the loaders frame is in the way for the original Ford location. This works just fine and it's accessible when sitting in the drivers seat.

I would have thought the captive nuts would have turned in the cage using a tap to make them course thread.
