I like gauges, the more, the better.

If you are keeping it and it's a worker, add one

When I get one that I am going to sell/trade

I keep a meat thermometer with me always.

I pop it in the neck when doing various tasks/loads

just to see the condition of the cooling system.

They'll fool ya sometimes. Working on an old AC,

stopped to mess with the carb needle/float, my hands told me

the engine was much too hot. Popped in the thermometer,

230 degrees....

It was running happily with no sign.

back to the shop.....

some enterprising inventor needs to make a radiator cap with a thermometer built in (sorta like some tractors that have one in the upper return)

Ultradog MN said: (quoted from post at 04:09:12 08/16/13) They did not come with a temp gauge.

Some guys like them so add one either in the upper radiator hose or tap into the head.

I just use my sniff gauge.

An attentive operator can usually tell if his engine is getting hot just by the way his engine smells.

Nuttin like boiling coolant is it... I have yet been able to tell the difference from the smell if its 250 are 350 deg...
I guess you could also look at it this way if it cools down and runs again it may live to see another day if not call the family in.... Its the gamble those take that believe in myths my self I have a temp gauge....

Just a thought would you be satisfied if none of the gauges worked on you blue tractors are is this a N thang...

"would you be satisfied if none of the gauges worked on you blue tractors are is this a N thang... "

Well Hobo, if I must confess...
I stole everything off of my own tractor to get a couple of other ones sold.
There are only two wires on it - the positive and negative battery cables.
I have to charge the batery once in a while but it's one of those big 4DLTs so I get about 75 starts before I have to do it again.
But I am working on it :)
See my post on the Ford board (RickB).
I have the new style block so am going to go with a 3600 style tach drive and gauge cluster, 10SI Alt and be done with that Lucas stuff.
I did have a OP gauge on it for a while but Kenny stole that so I'm working on a wing and a prayer. And I keep my nose and ears well tuned.

PS,
Pay no attention to the lack of a nut and cover on the steering wheel. They're just on there to keep people from stealing it aren't they?
