When the engine is first started there is a tapping noise in the front spark plug area. After running it decreases considerably. what is it?

Could also be a manifold leak.

Try other test that are recommended. Then, you could have sleeve no. one slipping when cranked and engine cold. when heats up it snugs up a little and less noise. You can check this by removing spark plug in no. one and crank. Does the sound get louder. If so, coulb be you problem. You can pull you head and do on sight examination for the cost of a head gasket and about an hour. Check valves while in there. Good luck.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see Yep, I had that issue on my 49 8N that probably didn't have 20 hours on a overhaul when I first heard it. The tractor ran great, had good oil pressure and the valves were properly adjusted (I suspected the valves at first). But it had a light knock or pecking that would get better and then wors. Also, the sound seemed to change as the engine warmed up but it never went away. I pulled the head, turned the engine over and the #3 sleeve popped up. Cleaned up the cylinder and sleeve, applied sleeve retainer and that solved the problem.

Go out on a dark night and start the tractor up. Look at the spark plug wires and see if you have arcing. If so that may be your noise.
