Needle and Seat Problem

Found out the needle and seat in the carb on my 49 8n ford is sticking, problem is the rubber tip on the end seems to be making it stick, they used to be all brass which would do good but everyone i see now is brass with the dark rubber tip, does anyone have or know where i can get a solid brass one? Marvel Schluber TSX 33 carb.

I had the same issue years ago when I rebuilt the carb on my 640 . I had discarded the old needle before finding out my problem . I have read since that a lot of others have had this same issue . My understanding is that NAPA can possibly get original parts for our Ns . We don't have a local NAPA store so I'm not so lucky . Check it out . God bless

Most all of them are rubber tipped. Twist the rubber tipped need back and forth in the seat several times before installing it. I have 10 Ns with those needles and seats and they are all satisfactory.

The viton tips stick often.I wont use them. The old steel tip dosent wear, the seat might.A carb rebuilder refuses to use viton tips.Twist them all you want. The new gas makes them sticky.Small engines used a soft seat that stuck to the needle a lot.

The good carb kits have a spring clip that hooks to the needle and float so when the float falls the needle comes down. The cheap kits do not have that and yep cause problems. Have one I am rebuilding that has the cheap kit in it but when done will have the spring clip on the needle

Have you bought a kit that has the old type in it? Funny thing my Super A Farmall has the viton tip in it and has been good, go figure!!

Friends A would stall out.I found the viton tip stuck tite.I have found the steel needles from B&S engines fit fine.Tecumseh engines use a steel needle.I will not put a viton tip needle in a carberater. Some MS carberaters have a spring that lets the float pull the needle open if it sticks.Sooner or later you will get some gasoline that makes the soft needle stick shut.We are trying to get rid or ethanol fuel in Maine. If 2 more NE states do the same the lousy gas will be gone.Pumps have stickers that say Enriched with ethanol.Big lie because ethanol has less BTUs than gasoline.

the old needle in the super A was a steel one, i'll put it back in the next time i have to go in the carb. the needle for the 8n was bigger than the super A, you know of a needle that will work in the 8n carb?

I check needles for size with my calipers.Old carberators will have needles that will fit.NEVER throw old parts away.

Those viton needles have a residue on them, left over from the manufacturing process. The cure is to clean both the needle and the seat with aerosol carb cleaner, (be generous with the cleaner) and when both are dry, shoot a little silicon spray lube on them.

I discovered that trick after having a few rebuilt carbs come back to me because of sticky needles. Never had another problem after that.

The viton tipped needles replaced the steel and brass needles because the all steel needles DID wear out and then no longer functioned as intended. The viton tipped needles do NOT wear out. The only thing that will create a wear ring on a viton tipped needle is someone using a hammer to "seat" the needle.

Viton tipped needles are the only thing available anymore. Learn how to work with them instead of complaining about them.

Amen, no problems with my two Ns either. Been using 10% alcohol gas for years here.
