I laid a bunch of beads on 3/8 cold rolled plate to get used to 7018 rods, and then welded the new end on the lift arm. I ground one side down to look for inclusions, and didn't see any. I left the other side as is. I am attaching pictures of both (I hope). Comments welcome re safety, etc.

thanks in advanxce.

7018..the blue color indicates hotter weld..white.cold..when color is golden.. amps right..wait till slag pops off ..then chip..this rod is a contact rod..in a corner weld..light it ..look away..feel rod melt into the puddle

metal is like glass..cracks where its marked.grind always..

Pconnie,

thanks - I am a noob, but thought the weld seemed too hot (even at 95 amps for a 1/8 rod) in that it took 10-15 seconds after lifting the stick for the glow to subside,a nd at the ends fo the weld (the edges of the lift arm) metal would just pour off and land on the ground- that's why the weld is a little narrower than the arm.

thanks!

Bill

nice job..if you start your weld in from the edge.there is more metal.wont blow off edge.light it in about half again the thickness of your metal.start a normal puddle then back up toward edge..

Pretty good looking weld. All I can see is you got it hot again grinding. Might not hurt to heat the area again and let it cool slowly. My minor cents. HTH

@Bob:

very interesting. I don;t think it was the grinder- I think I ground it when it was still too hot form the weld. When I finished grinding, it was all silvery, no temper colors. I thought of taking a picture, and the temper colors had by then appeared.

thanks

BIll

I agree its not noteworthy - but I am a noob at welding so I thought I post the pics to see if anyone sees an obvious goof or something I should be doing to examine the welds prior to use.

Run some weld on the narrow edges to build it up and then grind it down slightly higher than the lift arm. I would have left the weld craters in the middle as that's where a crack can start but any little depression, especially on the edge, can be a starting point for a crack. Did you leave a bit of a gap or grind into the weld from the opposite side to ensure 100% penetration? Looks good for noobie welder.

no, you misunderstand. I wasn't talking down your repair at all.

onthe contrary.

good to fix it rather than loose the balls..e tc.

repair ends are way cheaper than new arms.. and frankly.. the new arms coming out of china seem to be softer and bend more ( that I see ).. than the original arms.

so I deffinately prefer reapir the original ones when I can.

if the weld had good root and tie.. they you should be good another 60 years.

Pconnie- thank you... I bought an auto-darkening helmet... and at first it wasn't so sensitive and my eyes didn't like it so much. new batteries helped a lot.

I will NEVER use an auto dark helmet due to the fact I have had my eyes burned to many times because of them. I use only gold lens as in 24 caret gold lens in my helmets. Retired welder by the way. Mig/tig/stick
