Do you think this would would to keep out racoons etc for my chickens?

Also, I see there is electric wire 'Tape' and regular electric wire - any suggestions on which to go with? Have seen one at Walmart as well - the area to enclose is about 200 ft and I have a power outlet at the coop building.

ou didn't say whether the chickens will be able to touch the e-fence or not, but that one is a 'continuous' model, rather than pulsed and I have seen birds & squirrels killed by 'continuous' type & they hurt me a lot worse than pulsed type, too.
 

OK, good point, dont want to kill any wild birds and they are attracted by the left over feed from the chickens - will look for the pulsed type as well.

I have a continuous type on my chicken fence and it will kill birds and if a chicken that is small enough gets hooked up to it can be killed also. I have found many small birds dead hanging on the electric wire because the got one foot on it and the other fence and then you can have them short it out. I have also brushed up on it my self and boy did it bite hard
 
If you are sure its a Raccoon I would reccommend a large live trap. We have chickens and if we suspect there are Raccoons in the area I set the trap along the fenceline using dry cat food for bait and usually catch them the first or second night. I have never had a Raccoon problem in the daylight, they always come after dark.
 
Not common to hurt a chicken if full grown but yep birds sparrow size and smaller knocks them dead

I had coons, possum, fox and hawk/owl around my place.

added netting to the top of the pen.. that stopped the hawk / owl.

then I put in hardware wire around the base of the pens, burried 6" deep, and then put a fence board around the bottom perimeter of the pen.

a single errant animal can then be trapped.

I have loose dogs and it didn't seem to scare away the large male coons.
 
That charger will keep the Coons out of the chicken house or pen but it can kill them too.

It is a continious charge that will paralize and electrocute anything that gets on it and is grounded at the same time. I believe it could kill a man if he got into it and the charge crossed his heart.

I have one around my chicken pen about an inch away from the chicken wire and about six inches above the ground. The wire is also a ground. It has killed lots of rats. One of my free ranging roosters that was fighting with the one in the pen and he got across the hot wire. I got him off but he died a couple of days later. It also killed an owl that was trying to get in the chicken pen one night. A chicken snake can get across it too and become paralized but if I turn off the power it will come alive and crawl off. That is unless it has swallowed a half grown chicken!!

If kids are to be around the wire I would not have it.

The best kind are the ones that pulse a high voltage that can jump a gap of an inch or so. They will keep anything out but won't kill.

May make you kill yourself! :O)

The best thing I ever heard of was from a guy who raised sweet corn for farmers market. He picked up road kill coons and placed them around his sweet corn. Said that ended his problem.
 
I have that fishock charger.. and I have a heavier one for cattle.

i can guarantee you that neither will kill you.. might ruin your underwear in a desperate moment.. but ain't lethal unless you are a bird, lizard, or mouse or spider.

and yes.. I'd been lit up by both of them before.. :)

I had skunk getting through my fence that consistently read more than 8,000 volts on my tester. A hungry predator is a determined predator.

The best predator control is to make your livestock less appealing than other sources of food. You can provide them with food, provide them with routes through your farm so that they have easy access to food, and build deterrence. You'll never win a trapping war. If you do have an aggressive predator, find a way to train him. Once he's trained, he'll train his off-spring.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Nite Guard lights. I plan on installing a couple this coming season.

I use a solar energizer called a PRS100 from Premier out of Iowa (a recommendation from Dell) for my poultry and sheep. Premier makes a lot of different types of equipment.

For a good fencing set-up, you want to look at the output in joules of the energizer. I don't see that on the Fi Shock unit. I also would stay away from the unit just based on the price and that it's continuous power AC.

I do believe your wrong on that because if that type of fence charge could kill a man there is a law suit just waiting to happen and I have yet to ever here of such a suit going on. A company that had a fence charger that would be able to kill a man would be out of business fast due to all sort of safety issue. I use a continuous type charger and yes it hurts like a so and so and does kill small bird but that is about all it kills since by now I am sure it has been tested by more then one animal since it has been running now for 7 plus years. I do know my dogs sure do not like getting into it or the barn cats either both when they do you hear them complain
 
Ya do not think a company could make or sell a fence charger that was able to kill much of any animals due to all the people who would be out to sue them. Also just think what would happen if the court system get wind of a charger like that boy or boy that company would be belly up plus owning alot
 
yep.

I've had roosters get betweent he hotwire and the pen and squawk and make a huge rukus and fidgit for 30-40 seconds before extricating themselves.

no harm no fowl ( pun intended ).

Now.. i HAVE seen a small bird, mose and lizard and spider die.. as mentioned.

have for sure seen that...
 
Ya common for me in the summer to have to turn off the fence charger, remove dead bird and turn it back on due the the fact the bird shorts the fence out but other then that no harm no fowl or maybe should say dead fowl (pun intended). Oh and one thing I like to do if I find a black snake in the chicken house I catch it then lay ot on the electric fence and boy or boy dose that snake do a snake dance
 
my roosters and turkey will kill most snakes.. they are mean suckers.. :) rats too.. that's why i keep toms and roosters...
 
I have a coop with attached pen. Pen is chain link. Top of pen is all covered with chicken wire. Any holes have to be also wired down so coons won't get in. don't ask how I know. I have electric fence ONLY by the coop and alone one side, where the birds frequently dig out a trench on the inside of the pen. I've had coons dig, but NEVER away from the pen. They come at night, and focus on the coop. I laid down fencing under ground about a foot out, and 3" down, on both sides of the pen, and obv. in winter, they can't dig. I don't see possums, or coons, or foxes trying to dig around the pen area, but only by the coop, hence the buried fencing and electric fencing.

Small hole in the top near one edge, where a tree branch was-hiding it-allowed a coon to come in and get 5 layers last year. I eventually went commando with a flashlight just after dark and a .22 and nailed 3...but wiring put a permanent end to that hole.
 
Do have roosters but they do nothing to snakes. No turkeys do have a goose but she does nothing either and a Peacock also does not go after snakes. Now mice on the other hand if sen by a chicken became food
 
maybee it's because in fl there are so many snakes that out roosters .. or mine any go after them.

i know some chicken farmers cull out all but 12 roosters.. But i let 2-3 stay with each coop. They do their job well. while the hens are out eating ot scratching up feed for the bitties..the roosters stand around onthe edges... mean suckers.. :)
 
Well in Missouri this time of year no snakes of course but when we have them the roosters do nothing but run but then I do not want a rooster that will go after kids like some do
 
yep.. mine will kinda run at ya.. fearless suckers. a few will jump at the horses.. of course the horses win and stomp them flat.. :)
 
i've seen some long rattlers.. like 5-6' but have not seen any of the huge python or anaconda at large.. I guess inthe everglades they are having a problem with them.. but not near me.

corn snakes and similar.. black snakes, moccasins and rattlers are about the norm. 5-6' is a good snake here..
 
Ya did not remember if your in south FL or more to the north. I have only been in FL twice once in boot camp in Orlando and then once on a shore stop with the JFK and that was at Jacksonville
 
North enough to hold the big snakes at bay just a little bit by the cooler weather then I guess
 
yep, and we aren't as wet as more areas south.

go about 20m south of me.. or 15 m e / w of me and it gets wet again..
 
southofme is lake county.. .. they call it that due tot he water.

i'm sided by volousia.. it's more or less beachside county.. :)
