I have been using aol for the last month on a free trial. Now the time has come to start paying ($21.95/mo) or sign off. I would like to know who your internet provider is, do you like them, why, how much do you pay, etc. I want to stay "connected" but I'm not sure aol is the way to go. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

There are other local ISPs to Houston that will GIVE you a new computer for $21 a month if you sign up for 2 years.

Jim,

I just switched to dellnet for $75/year ($6.25/mon) when I bought a computer from them. I usually connect at 44Kbps. I live in Morgan county but use their Ogden number (local for me). They have other Utah numbers, including Salt Lake. I would suspect that you don't have to buy a Dell just to use them as an ISP.

Thanks, John. I live in Heber but have local area calling to Provo/Orem, similar to your arrangement in Morgan. I will call Dellnet and talk to them. The wife wants a faster computer anyway. I got a tractor so I guess it's only fair. I'm still going to come see your funk someday.

I had to promise the wife that I'd sell one of my other N's to get the Funk. Looks like I'll be parting with her... that is the 1940 9N. It's a shame, since it is the best mechanically operating of the three I have.

As has been said before, just because both ends have 56k capability, the phone system may limit you. Out where I am the best you can get is 26400, maybe 28800. Phone lines inside your house, outside your house,or phone company equipment can govern how fast you can go.

3com has a service to test speed. I will try to post the link, but if not go to www.3com.com
Go to modem section and then to the 56K section.

I use SOFTDISK.COM in Shreveport, it is $16.95 full coverage. My employer uses SHREVE.NET and they are in the same building thus we have a network connection at 10mbs, wish I could could bring it home with me! That is $300 a month for 34 people in the company.

They both work fine, of course the phone line is the bottle neck. When cable gets here it will fly!

One important thing to consider is the location of the dialup number...is it local or not? Depending on your phone service, you may pay a per minute charge even if you are calling a seven-digit dial up (doesn't look like a toll call). These charges can mount up and may more than offset savings with a cheap ISP.

Thanks for the comments. I'm an internet rookie. The universal advice to find a local ISP makes good sense. I'll start asking around among my nerdier friends and acquaintances (shouldn't have skipped my 25th HS class reunion---I know EXACTLY who I should have talked to) and get their recommendations. One thing I can tell is I need a faster modem. 28800 just doesn't cut it. I have 56K at work and would like something faster than that, but I'm out in the sticks too where fiber optics is the lint you get in your eye.

bg's advice is excellent(because that's what I did! :o) Check out this site for local ISPs, then ask around, friends, etc. Depending where you live you may be limited to ~30K. But definately get a 56K.

I use AOL several years ago. I got tired of the slow loading and advertising. It has a pretty user-friendly interface and access to lots of stuff. But you can find the same stuff using a local ISP and MSIE and Netscape browsers are free. There are plenty of ISP's and web hosting firms in your local area. I'd suggest using a local ISP because you keep your money closer to home and can develop a rapport with the suport people when you need them. Check your local paper or phone book for ISP's.

My ISP is Every One's Internet. They charge $10 a mounth. I Believe they are local to Houston. You should be able to find local access at about the same rate. There are some local (to Houston) ISPs charging $7 a mounth. Check your local news paper. Here, the cheep ISPs advertise in the COMPUTER section of the classified. I would not use one of them.

My ISP allows me 10 email addresses and 100 Mb web space.

...and $10/month isn't cheap? I pay $10/month for 30 hours, 1 e-mail and 10MB web space. All of which is plenty for me. Eric

$10 is about average for an ISP in Houston. I can think of 5 different ones that advertise on local tv and radio.

With multipul email accounts, I have one for me, one for my wife, one for buisness, and one for posting on discussion board (I will change this one if it starts getting spammed).

My web site has many pictures on it. 10 meg would limit the quantity and quality of the pictures.

We all have different needs. If what you have is good for you, then don't change.

$10/mo would be nice, but I just checked and on my free month trial with aol I've used 80+ hours. Is this a sign of a serious addiction?

I would say that is about normal for someone starting out as the learning curve and newness has not worn off yet. Check back in a few months and if you still have no other interest then it could be a problem, ha.

Considering that I didn't really need an 8N but got one after reading all the stuff on this board which made it sound like the thing to do, I would say you are okay, no addictions here!

Here's the worst part: I don't even have an N. I'm using an 800. Tried to get an N too just for fun, but the little woman put her foot down. Need a bigger tractor than an N for what I need to do so all I do is read about 'em here. Lots of good general tractor knowledge to be had, though. The Ford board is OK, but doesn't get the response this one does.

There is a reason for not much activity on the Ford board. Those people have tractors that they use and do the job with every day without a lot of hub-bub. These antiquers on the "N" board are just play toys, and art objects. Conversation pieces, therefore all the conversation. I "graduated" to real tractors a lot of years ago, but do recognize the attraction to these old toys. What I cannot understand is the relatively small difference in price between these toys, and the real workhorses.

Don't let some of the old heads hear you talking about the N's as just toys and not real tractors, you could get a thread longer than Marvin's started.

It is my play toy, but it did a right smart job on leveling my 300' driveway of gravel, and it moved about 1\2 an acre of topsoil to some serious eroding low spots elsewheres in the yard. As for the garden, I ran the disc over after harvest and planted the same day. With the roto tiller, I would still be pushing and shoving and uncloging the tines of beans and okra and stuff.

When the little ones come over, I tell them it is a REAL TRACTOR, but really old, like me.

I am with southwind.net in Ks. I don't know how far out they are as for service to other parts of the country. I pay 21.95 a month. I would like to get hooked up to the Cable T.V. fiber optics as you can download 100 times faster that a 56k modem. It cost about the same price but they don't have it out in the country yet and I am moving in hopefuly 2-3 weeks so would pay to do it now. Most all your providers are about the same. Also, thanks for the come back on the 600 with the davis backhoe.
