Help
I am replacing the resistor but forgot the wiring sequence i.e. the
resistor has two posts and the ignition has two posts. how do i
wire the ignition to the resistor?
Where can I find the electrical guide for an 8N?
Thanks
Otto

It would be most helpful if you would tell us if you are talking about the OEM ballast resistor, if your tractor is 6v or 12v & has a front or side distributor.

Assuming that you are talking about the placement of the OEM ballast resistor on a 6v frontmount, the wiring diagram Bob posted is correct. The resistor itself goes on top of the terminal block.

If ANY of the above assumptions are incorrect, post back w/ the correct info.

your assumptions are correct i.e. front mounted distributor, 6V, napa resistor replacement.
therefore, the resistor gets wired to the coil and ignition. the ignition goes to the resistor and to ground. the lights go to the lights and to ground on the resistor.
what does positive ground mean if 6V?
thanks in advance for your help

bob
thanks a million for the diagram. i now have a fighting chance of hooking the ignition and resistor (terminal block) together properly.

Positive ground means the (+) battery post is connected to the tractor's chassis unlike most modern vehicle electrical systems that have the battery's (-) post connected to the chassis (negative ground)..

Since you state you ARE using headlamps, I will add this:

The diagram I reposted is GREAT except that it is better to source the power from the lower terminal on the terminal block so the current does NOT have to pass through the ignition switch.

Also, add a 15 or 20 Amp fuse ahead of the lightswitch (if the switch doesn't have it's own fuse).

" the resistor gets wired to the coil and ignition. the ignition goes to the resistor and to ground. the lights go to the lights and to ground on the resistor. "

NO!

Look at the drawing.

Now look at your terminal block & resistor.

There are 3 studs w/ nuts on the terminal block. Attach the resistor to the two on the top.

S-1 is the ignition switch. One wire goes to the bottom stud on the terminal block & the other goes to the stud on right side of the resistor. The only wire on the left side of the resistor goes to the coil.

When you turn the ignition switch on, it closes the circuit between the battery & the coil through the resistor.

The wire to the light switch goes from the right side of the resistor to the light switch.

DO NOT wire the lights through the resistor or the ignition switch.

Once again.....the wire TO the light switch & the wire FROM the ignition switch go to the stud on the right of the resistor; the ONLY wire on the left resistor stud goes TO the coil.

Positive ground means the positive post on the battery attaches to the chassis of the tractor.

PS........

Not to confuse you, but I explained how to wire the lights per the diagram & then told you (as Bob also did) NOT to wire the lights through the ignition switch.

So, just put the wire to the ignition switch on the bottom stud of the terminal block, as Bob said.

In Bobs diagram the wavy line is the resister just to help you understand it a tad bit better

I doubt you got the correct resistor and terminal block from NAPA.What was the part number?Correct parts are a must for your tractor. don b

This diagram shows the light switch hooked to the resistor, which is not good - light switch feed should be connected to the terminal block. thereby bypassing the ignition switch, which has trouble enough carrying the ignition current without the added current draw of the lights.

bruce, don, bob and bill,
I really appreciate your response however here's where I am:
a. i have replaced the distributor, points, rotor, 6v coil, ignition switch, resistor. ALL FROM YT
b. I have had two other sources confirm that I am getting 6v to the coil but do not get spark to the plugs.
Is it possible that the coil is faulty? Coil works but the cap/rotor/points not firing?
Would really appreciate your electrical advice......this has me baffled.
