Is price too high?

Hello, I am considering purchasing an 8N tractor with frontloader/hyd bucket and a back blade for the 3 point. The tractor seems sound and the tires are fairly new. Only problems I can see are possible plugged carb(had to hold choke to keep running when warm)and tilt on bucket leaks down rapidly. I need this tractor for landscaping and grading work on our property and possibly light farm duty. Asking price was 4800. I am considering offering 4000. I've been told that's still too much. Anyone think I'm nut's?

Hi Dan: I'd offer him $2,500 max and let him keep the loader to sell separately. You could take the money you saved and purchase a new, reversible, 6 cubic foot, 3-pt. scoop ($200), new box blade ($320) and bush hog ($550) to help you with your chores. You'd have money left over for a boom, a carry-all/lift, and parts to repair the carb, etc. Even though there are a ton of N's out here with loaders, the consensus of opinion seems to be that the N's are too light to handle them comfortably. I was Hell-bent to put one on my '52 until I got advice from a lot of folks here who are much more knowledgeable than I. I still need one, and am instead negotiating as I write with a fellow who is asking $3,500 for a '56 860 in great mechanical and hydraulic shape, but with lousy sheetmetal. This seems to be a much better choice on which to put a loader.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

5/5 of the first responses indicate the price is a tad on the high side. Check comparables in your area. The loader and blade are of marginal utility value, IMO. A disk and bush hog would be a better deal, to me.

Dan..... ...As much as I think N's are great and useful tractors, and unless you really have a "gottahavitts" for an 8N, I'd suggest the true value of your described tractor is about half the asking price. Truth is, N's are really not that great of a front loader machine. And if you are willing to spend $4000, you definately can get a much better frontend loader tractor with power steering for example. I'd insult the seller by making a $2000 offer and be willing to sweeten it up to $2400 and walk away saying here's my card, call me if you change your mind, you never know.

My opinion and $1 will get you a cup of coffee at a greasespoon. Good Luck..... ..Dell

Boy, I second that one! For $4000 I could buy a whole lot more machine then just an N

Nolan
8N with loader & Sherman $1800

I must just shop the wrong places.

Around here, $4000 wouldn't be too unreasonable for the tractor/loader combination in the shape he describes. You'd probably get it down a little below that price here but not a whole lot.

Unless you get REAL lucky -- I found out my Aunt sold her 8N for $300 a year or two before I started looking for a tractor. She also threw in a single-bottom plow for another $10. AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

Oh they'll go upwards of that here too, depending on where you are and who's selling. It pays to keep on shopping though.

I also think it helps greatly to be more capability oriented and not so machine name oriented. I watched my father in law miss a MF 155, fully restored and beautifull for $2450 because he had Ford on the brain.

I got mine through word of mouth and lots of asking around. Certainly not from an auction or the classifieds at its price.

And, of course, when you do find the right machine at the right price, you buy it. Dawdle, and it may be gone while you think.

I certainly agree with you about hunting around and not being set upon a certain tractor.

I bought my 2N at an auction where I had intended to bid on a Jubilee (a '53). The 2N came up first and when the bidding slowed down at $1500 I had to jump in. I got the 2N for $2000.

After the auction I talked to the guy who had bought the Jubilee and found out it was his 2N I'd bought (it was on consignment). He also sold two other tractors at the auction and had been prepared to go WAY higher for the Jubilee than I was willing to go.

I was raised on a dariy farm with an 8N loader tractor. The problem with that loader was when you get a go load in your bucket, there wouldn't be enough weight on the rear tires to back up.
My opinion....a small loader tractor needs to be a 4x4. You might find a newer 4x for a little more money. $4,000 is a bit much for this 8N I think.

I won't pay that much, regardless of condition. Too many better options out there for a working tractor, IMHO.

I think you could do better for that amount of money. That's just my opinion for the little its worth.
