1951 petrol fordon major

Can anyone help me I have got a fordson major petrol tractor, I got it going by putting in a 12volt sports coil in now it is idling too fast I tried to retard the timing but when I put it in gear it goes to die when I take it out of gear its starts to roar again & the exhaust is getting too hot.

Bradley........it aint'chur timing, ittz'chur GOVERNOR. Sparkies has 'nuttin' to do with runn-away engine; GOVERNOR controls engine speed. Check yer governor arms and make certain they are connected correctly. .......Dell

I would like to thank everyone, I found the high/low governor arm had a lot of slack in it re-adjusted &
adjusted the timing & is now running like a little
charm.
