Wiring 9N - motor keeps running after key is off

Wired my tractor to this diagram exactly (top diaagram). Why will my key switch not cut the engine off? Three position switch (bat. Ign. acc.)

Had to choke the sucker to kill her power. :)

Thanks for any advice.

Will start without key switch hooked up also.

You say, "Three position switch (bat. Ign. acc.)" & wired EXACTLY as diagram.
There is no 3 position switch shown in that diagram. Therefore, it can't be "exactly".
Further, there must be some kind of wiring error or you couldn't have power to coil under all the conditions you describe. A wiring check is in order, to be sure it is like diagram.

Milkman......would it surprize you to learn you DID NOT wire it exactly like the drawing???

Unless you know exactly how to use a 3-terminal ignition switch, guess what??? you miss-wired yer ignition switch. BIG giveaway "will start without key switch hooked up". Use only 2-TERMINALS of yer 3-terminal ignition switch.

Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reasons. I know 8-ways to do it right. I now know a gazillion + 1 ways to do it wrong.

ok.... you are right ... kinda

I wired the BAT. side of the key switch to the bottom post on my resistor block (battery to starter swich and ammeter also wired to this bottom post). Other side of ammeter is wired to main post on Altenator.

I wired the key switch IGN. side to the right side resistor block where the Altenator pig tail wire (3 wire Delco) mounts.

The lonly post on the left side has only the coil wired to it(in line resistor on this wire also).

So, I have two wires coming from the Alenator. One from pigtail to resistor block, right side
and the main alt. wire ran to one side of my ammeter.

I completely took the key switch out and removed the two wires from it. Tractor cranked right up without a key switch.
I then promptly choked it till it died, removed battery pos. cable and came in to read your responce.

This is a brand new wiring harness purchased from this site, new resistor block purchased from this site and an old three position key switch.

More info on wiring in my original post might of helped.
Sorry but I get a little excited at times.

What do you think?

erify that you have the diode with band end toward the alternator & connected to alternator terminal #1.
verify that alternator terminal #2 is connected to the main alternator output stud-terminal (this also goes to ammeter)

#2 does go to output stud. Also have a wire that goes to the ammeter from the main output stud.

#1 goes to right side of resistor block.

I am at a loss here....

thanks

K. Unplug the 2-wire connector from the alternator & see how it behaves then?
If still the same, then disconnect the alternator stud-terminal wire, being careful not to let the wire short to anything (tape)....now how does it behave?

If all is really wired as per the diagram, then it should be clear that battery voltage is available from the starter switch over to the center terminal on the resistor block AND that is the end of the line (without the key switch connected AND without the alternator connected)....so if it still runs with alt & key sw disconnected, it simply isn't wired correctly, because there is no path to get battery power to the resistor/coil wiring.

Thanks for walking me thru this.

I had to turn the key on or it would not crank. It WILL turn over without the key turned but will not start! Turn the key and it fires right up, but will not cut off.... wigled the wire conector on alt. as to unplug it and it died.

I then took the key switch off, held the two key switch wires together pushed the button and she fired up again... seperated wires and still ran... go to pull plug on alt. and she dies.

Is the motor suposed to turn over by pushing the starter button without the key switch turned?

Starter button switch is new too. Can it be wired backwards?

Thanks!

ased on what you have found/reported, I would suggest taking the alternator to a parts store and get a free test on it.......bet a beer that it has a problem.
