2 Questions...what did I do to my 8N??

I have an 8N, front mount w/12v conversion, just bought it about a month ago or so. It was working fine, started right up every time the first couple of weeks. Over the last week or so I have had to jump it each time, just not enough juice in the battery to crank it. After it gets started it seems to run ok. Is this the battery or the alternator? Or?

Now for the REALLY stupid question. I had used the tractor for a couple of hours this afternoon and stopped to take a break. Came back out to start it back up, had to jump it, and hooked the cables up wrong. Of course it went bang, but it was only for a second. Hooked the cables up the right way, tried to start it, and now the tractor will barely start. When it does start it runs rough and dies after about a minute or so. Any thoughts on what I blew up?

DAGGUMMITT!

Thanks

My 8N is still 6v, and since there are numerous ways to convert to 12v, you'll probably need to provide some more details about your charging system for someone familiar with your setup to be able to help. Your first paragraph makes it sound like you're not charging enough or at all, but you already knew that...

I can, with all certainty and gravitas, tell you that all electronics run on smoke. Since it sounds like you let the smoke out of your system, that's probably why it's not working. :p

I'll back away and let someone more knowledgeable help from here on out.

(warning: 6v vs. 12v always brings folks out of the woodwork!)

Disconnect the alternator & see if it starts better on the jumpers.. most likely you need another alternator...they can NOT tolerate a reversed (wrong polarity) connection. Take alternator to parts house for free testing.

umm?........ennytime you have alternator problems - questions, take yer alternator in to enny autoparts store for a "free" check-out.

From yer description, sounds like your alternator is the deceptively desirable 1-wire abomination that don't start charging until about 1800-rpms, (3/4-throttle) Iff'n you never went to WOT, yer alternator never turns "on" and yer 12-v battery will discharge after about 6-days of running. Does this sound familiar???

I'm a fan of the 3-wire conversion with idiot lite that starts charging at about 600-rpms like GM and Delco intended.

Surprizingly enuff, the starter motor don't care positive or negative ground. You can jumpstart direct to yer starter motor stud and won't hurt 'nuttin'. Iff'n you foolishly jumped to yer battery BASSACKWARDS, you will BLOW yer battery up. Take yer tractor battery in for a "free" check-up. ......Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason who knows 8-ways to convert to 12-volts that work and a gazillion ways that don't

Ed.......you write....."I can, with all certainty and gravitas, tell you that all electronics run on smoke. Since it sounds like you let the smoke out of your system, that's probably why it's not working"........you gott that right ......Dell

Way too strong of words, and description.

My one wire 6v, positive ground, Chevy 10SI, takes no more RPM to start charging, than a [b:534a14becb]piece of crap genny [/b:534a14becb]needs to charge a small percent at all.

And then when it does start charging, it will be with all of the charge needed to get the battery back up quickly.

And even handle lights on too, if that is yer case.

No need to have to try to adjust that screw that sets the charging rate, and then when you turn the lights off, boil yer battery.

I still love ya though Dell!!!!

I'm guessing a dead battery, and non working ( posibly toasted ) alternator.

ignition needs sparks to run...

Dell

Looks like my alternator is a one wire bandit.

Does the tractor have to be run at 3/4 throttle to charge or just run up to WOT at start up?

Thanks
Steve

Steve......once you "goose" the 1-wire bandit to 3/4-throttle, it is turned on and will charge at 600-rpms like 3-wire. 1-wires are great in old automobile conversions where you haffta bring yer engine up to about 2500-rpms and slip the clutch before the vehicle starts moving. Me? I don't like "jazzin" a cold engine to full-throttle, do you? And iff'n you don't kick-start that 1-wire, most tractor operations are usually less-than 1/2-throttle and yer 1-wire alternator will NEVER charge yer battery.......Dell

Well here's the update. Took the battery and alternator in for testing today. Battery was bad, alternator good. Bought new battery. Hooked everything up, tractor cranks fine but does not fire. What's the next thing I should check/replace?

Thanks
Steve
