2n 12 volt wiring issue

I bought a 1945 2n ford tractor. This is my first experience with a 12 volt conversion. The Tractor was already somewhat converted, but was still using positive ground. The tractor ran ok but wasn't charging battery. I have since rewired tractor with diagram found on this site for early 8n ford tractor front distributor (attached below). For some reason when I attach battery all lights work fine but when I push starter button system grounds out. I have narrowed it down to starter itself is grounded. By that I mean terminal post at starter is a ground and I dont know why. Hoping someone can shed some light because I am running out of ideas.......Thanks, Jim

There is an insulator where the conductor stud goes into the starter. It's possible that is shorted.

Remove the flat conductor from the solenoid to the starter and then try jumping from the battery directly to the starter post with a set of jumper cables. You can even use another vehicles battery to do this. If sparks fly and nothing happens then it may be shorted somewhere in the starter or the insulator I mentioned.

Also put the tractor in third gear and rock it back and forth by pushing on the wheels and see if the fan moves. The starter could be stuck in the flywheel ring gear. It happens!

If the engine won't turn get more help and rock it hard and it may break loose. Do not tow to try to move it. That will bend the starter shaft. If you can't get it unstuck rocking it loosen the two retaining long bolts and hit the starter with a hammer and that may break it loose.

Do not tow if it is stuck.
