Is there an adjustment to the steering box?

The right wheel steering stuff is extremely loose, to the place it'll wobble if I am on the road in 4th gear. Even in third gear. The left side is fairly tight, so I'm wondering if there is a way to adjust the steering so the right side is tighter. This will actually be in the steering box where my problem is. All the linkages are solid enough, including where the steering arm meets the knurled shaft on the steering box. Anybody else experience this?

My 1947 8N does the same thing. It rolls smoothly until you hit a bump in the road or start into a turn. A long-time Ford tractor mechanic told me to prop my foot against the right steering arm when driving on the road: It doesn't wobble if you do this, but you have to give yourself more time to slow down/stop. It's a lot easier than replacing the steering box.

Stever..... ...slow down

Since N-Tractors have had 3 different steering gear boxes, its difficult to give any meaningful advice.

That said, there is a "rumor" that all N-Tractors have a "right wheel wobble problem" when driven at "speed".

I can't verify that, but my professional experience about "structural dynamics", tells me that this "rumor" is quite possable. Its just like rubbing the rim of a fine wine glass, too fast, too slow, too hard, too light, but with just the right touch, it will ring (viberate).

Same thing, with N-Tractors, at just the right speed the wheel will start to wobble (viberate), slow down and it doesn't. But a different tractor may wobble at a different speed or not at all (something about build-up of tolerances).

Hope this helps..... ...Dell

Just bought an 8N. At the higher speeds, on a smoothe surface, you'd swear the right front wheel is going to wobble and break right off. The guy I bought it from is trying his best to correct it but he's not having much luck. It must be in the genes.

Stever..... .as I said, there are 3 N-Tractor steering gear boxes, I haven't a clue which one you have so I can not even begin to give further advice.

When airplane wings "wobble", it is from flying too fast and is called "flutter", and the airplane falls out of the sky. Its a secret phenonimum, that only the pilot knows about and he does not ever want to go there.

This why I told you to "slow down", that wobble starts out small and keeps going bigger and bigger and bigger and pretty soon the wheel will fall off just like the airplane's wings does.

Also slowing down will keep the bugs off your teeth (grin)..... ...Dell

As Dell stated, there are several types of steering boxes. The latest model (After serial number 216988) is adjusted by the sector adjusting screws, one on each side of the steering box and the proper shims between the cover/tube assembly and the base. Check up and down movement of the steering wheel it should be between .006 and .010. Others styles are more difficult to obtain proper mesh. I am currently rebuilding mine . The steering shaft broke right were it was previously welded.
Happy Motoring
