2N starter button and serial number

I just have begun work on my first project tractor and am having a ball working on it. I have already rebuilt the carb, flushed the radiator, installed new rad hoses and cleaned the points. This forum has given me some great tips. I have 2 questions that I need help with. First, the serial number on the engine is almost completely gone. I can read a portion of most of the numbers, so I can be reasonably confident with what I think the serial number is. Does anyone know of any tricks I could use to try to get a better read of the number? With what I can read, an dlooking at the shop manual I purchased, I'm almost certain I have a 1946 2N.
My second question is with the starter button. I have to really push down hard to get it to make contact, to start the engine. Do I need a new starter button or is there an adjustment I can make?

Clean the area of you numbers off real good with carb cleaner and a rag. Do not use sand paper etc. to do so. Then take some white paint and brush a little bit on then wipe off with a rag. The paint should stay in the numbers but not on the high area around the numbers. As for the starter button you might try spraying it with brake cleaner but in the long run you will probably have to pull the tranny cover and replace it
