Lift won't lower !?!?

I have a 1950 8n tractor that I've had for a short period of time. With-in about 2 hours of arriving home with the tractor I discovered someone had changed the lift cover on the 8N, it had a 9N cover (no manaul draft lever). When I first used the tractor the lift would leak down quickly when the power take off wasn't running. Since that time I have rebuilt the lift cylinder. It now works fine...or until Saturday it did! I "bush-hogged" around the family fish pond, lowered the lift, switched the tractor off and tried my luck with the fish. About an hour later I started the tractor up again to move it to another location and was completely surprised to find the lift would not lower. Is this a common problem? What to check? Does this have anything to do with the 9N lift cover?

Also, when I mow with a finishing mower, and I lower my lift to the desired level, the automatic draft (I guess) causes the lift to move up and down a great deal. This makes mowing with a finishing mower (two wheels on back) almost impossible. If I were to replace the lift cover with an 8N cover will this help? ...or is this the normal lift actions for a tractor of this type?

Thanks,
Keith Terry

My question would be: "Do you know for sure it's an 8N with a 9N hydraulic system?" It may be an 8N motor in a 9N, etc. 3 or 4-speed transmission? Brakes on right side, clutch on left? If it has a 9N cover, then it would have to have a 9N/2N pump, which is a little different from an 8N pump.
Anyway, sounds like your exhaust valve is stuck closed or more likely, your linkage has come loose, which is a common occurence with the 9/2N setup.

The tractor has a 4 speed transmission and both brake pedals are on the right side.

Another bit of info is the fact that when the tractor and PTO are running the lift continues to try and come up, and no matter how I position the control lever it will not go down.

Thank you for your comments.

My 2N did this to me once. Turned out the yoke became disconnected from the valve body. A symptom as that the lift lever moved up and down very easily. No resistance at all.

I found out the hard way, after a number of greasy hours working on it, that it can be fixed by removing the inspection cover and feeling around to see if the balls at the bottom of the yoke are engaged in the sockets. If not, squeeze the yoke arms together to give them more tension, the re-engage it in the sockets.

Thanks...I will check it this weekend (first chance) to see if that is the problem.

If indeed what you have is a 9N cover, you have draft control only, no position. This means that either the lift is going up or going down. Only with a very delicate touch can you maintain the lift at a given position. If your finish mower has only two wheels, I think some Woods are like this, you will want to invest in a set of limiter chains that go from the top link on the tractor to the drawbar arms. You set these so you maintain a minimum height while mowing. My finish mower has 4 wheels, but almost everyone with a 9N or 2N uses them on bush hogs.

As far as the lift not working, you will have to pull the inspection plate to look, but if I were betting, I would say the yoke came off the control valve. I have heard of some people putting nylon tie wraps around the yoke arms to keep tension on them. If they come loose- no control.

The chain sounds like a good idea. Can it be bought from a "tractor store" or is this a custom made item?

I'll check the Yoke the next chance I have.

Thank you,

Keith
