Is it the battery or the starter????

Last week, I charged the battery and started my 1940 9N (15750) with no problem after winter storage. I used it for no more than a half your. Runs good. Graded the driveway and drove to the neighbors to get a handle for the grader bent. Now it will barely crank and the started seems to disengage (makes a whirring sound). I had the battery check (purchased in 4/98) and they said it was good.

So, is it likely the battery is bad – even if it say it is good? Or, is there something wrong with the starter?

PS. Had the same problem last fall. Also the battery seems to wear down fast, when the lights are on. Gage reads 10 amps with light off and maybe a few with them on.

Thanks in adbvance!

ColBob..... .remember the 6 volt mantra "keep 'em clean, bright, and tight".

Doesn't take much corrosion in a 6 volt system to muckem up. Make certain that you have the proper 6 volt 2 ga battery cables. Those wimpy 12 volters won't do.

3 years life (1998 - 2001) on a 6 volt automobile battery with the lousy voltage regulator systems (3rd brush) is pretty phenominal. If you want longer 6 volt battery life, you'll have to buy a real 6 volt tractor battery. Most people don't because they don't think it is worth the $$$$..... ...Dell
