I am wanting to put a temp. gauge on my 8n, but I can,t find a place to put the bulb on my sending unit. The only thing I can find is a 3/8 pipe plug on the left side of the block. The guage that was on it was cut off. It has the side mount dist. If that makes any difference.

Tim Hen, I don't know if HoBo gave you the instructions
on installing temp. guage in the boss on the left
side of the head above the oil filter, but I followed them and it works fine.radiator hose and
block drain installation are ok.,but head install
is more professional. Good luck!!

Someone found this device to allow easy splicing of a tap into the upper radiator hose. I haven't tried it, but it looks simple enough.

I actually installed my temp gauge in the lower radiator hose with a Sch 40 reducing "T" and some hose clamps. Under normal operating temps it varies a few degrees from the top of the radiator, but my goal was not accuracy, but rather to let me know when the radiator fills up with grass seeds while hoggin. Works great. The temp reads steady until the radiator needs to be brushed off and then it starts to soar. And it installs without the trouble of getting to the upper hose.

I installed a temp gauge in the top radiator hose on my 8N. Cut out a section of the hose and used a piece of thin wall pipe with a fitting brazed into it for the sending unit. Works fine

My 1948 8N had a flat spot on the left, front of the head, next to the water return port. I went to an auto supply and got a temp. gage which came with various sized fitting. I drilled the proper size hole in the head and tapped it and installed the bulb. What little metal shavings might get into the water jacket are few. It works great.James

There's a flat spot on the left hand side of the motor towards the front and upper part of the engine. A lot of people install theirs there. I don't kknow about the 3/8 inch pipe plug unless you are talking about the drain plug. Its for draining the water in the motor during the winter so it doesn't freeze and crack your block.

I've also heard of people installing the temp gauge on the upper radiator hose - but not too sure how that would work..
