A few days ago posted up about troubleshooting my 52 8N that was hard to start when hot, and started missing when hot as well. The general consensus was to replace my round can coil. Bit the bullet and did this and was very disheartened when I still had the same problems - I thought for sure that was it. So, I dinked around with it last night some and discovered if I retarded the timing some, the popping would smooth out and I could start it without choke at about half quadrant when hot - IMPROVEMENT! The only concern is I had to retard it to the point the engine sounds like it is bogging slightly, not smooth like before (except for the popping of course). I thought I had the timing right before as I could snap the throttle from idle and it would respond quickly. Now it stumbles before reving up on a quick snap. That usually tells me the timing is retarded too much, but it sounds and starts MUCH better now... I know I should drag my 12v battery out of the car so I can hook my timing light up and check where the timing is at (I only have a 12v timing light), but any thoughts on my discovery?

TIA,
Dan

Sounds to me like the centrifugal spark advance in the distributor has failed.
