We have a tractor with a the orignal 6 volt positve ground system. When recharging the battery with a 6 volt charger what is the correct way to hook up the charger to the battery?
Thanks in advance. Jeff

I've got my 2N sitting in the barn with a trickle charger on it now. + to + and - to -.
Battery is about shot and haven't gone to the TS to get a new one yet. I don't take it out or disconnect it either.
I had the same question and the only other advice someone gave me and it was good-Don't turn on your ignition or try to start it hooked up this way if your a positive ground.

Duck.. as long as you are + to + and - to - starting the tractor or turning the ignition on won't hurt anything. Some chargers even have a starter boost setting. Kinda hard to use that if you can't turn the ignition on...

Well I am no electrical wizard and tend to be safer than sorrier.LOL
I'm not sure who told me about that on the battery and not starting a + gound while hooked up to the charger but it was someone on one of the tractor boards.
I respect the fact you are right since you have most likely forgotten more than I will ever know about tractors etc. I just know I have had some bad experiences and if there is ever a chance for something to go wrong it will find me and prove it once again...LOL
When I have a second tractor as a back up I'll try it. Guess my name should be Chicken instead of DUCK>>>LOL

As long as your charger is 6v, just make sure the polarities match, and you will be good to go.

Now that said.. there are a few tricks to jump starting a positive ground tractor.. especially a 6v one from a 12v negative ground vehicle.. but it's safe if you do it correctly. However if you do it wrong you can have a battery explosion!

Have fun!

Jeff..... ....don't matter positive or negative ground; don't matter 6 or 12 volts; THE RULE IS THE SAME. Charger POSITIVE (red) goes to battery POSITIVE (+). And it should be intuitively obvious the Charger NEGATIVE (black) goes to battery NEGATIVE (-)

And YES, iff'n yer cutt-outt relay is working properly, you can charge with the battery STILL in the tractor. Iff'n you don't know about yer cutt-outt, play-itt SAFE and just disconnect the HEAVY cable to yer starter; and now observe charger polarity conventions as previously described..... ....respectfully, Dell

Connect the battery charger the same way you would any battery. Red (+) to Positive and Black (-) to Negative. Your tractor cares about positive ground but the battery does not.
