Lift system and PTO problem (8N)

My 8N lift system stopped working. So I drained out the nasty stuff in the transmission, flushed with kerosene and filled with 5 gals of 80-90 weight oil. I start it up and still no lift. I put the lift lever in the up position and engaged the PTO and noticed that if we picked up the lift arms and held them up, the system would build enough pressure to hold them up on its own. Until I dropped the lift lever, the arms stayed up even when we stood on the lift arms. But I could not get the lift arms to raise on their own. And then, worse, the PTO stopped working. When I tried to llet out the clutch, it was like the PTO had seized up - the result being that the engine would die. Before today, I had never had trouble with the PTO not working - just the lift system. I thought putting in fresh oil would help but it seems I've made matters worse. Any ideas?

Try disengaging the lever that shifts the PTO and see if the tractor still stalls. If it does it is not the PTO but maybe the transmission has gotten hung in two gears at the same time which can happen on an old transmission.

If it still stalls the tractor when the PTO is engaged then the pump must have had something happen to it and you may have to pull it out and inspect the pump sections to see if something has come loose or broken.
