Well I hope I'm not opening a can of worms by asking this so here goes. Has anyone here ever decided to paint their tractor different than it came from the factory. By different I dont mean a shade or two off but completely different. Now I know this might offend some who believe the machine should be kept as original as possible, but after a while all the restorations begin to look the same. I'm aware it will probably decrease its value some, but after all its only paint and it can be returned to the original colors at any time. I'm thinking of doing my Jubilee entirely gloss black. The FORD scripts will be done in gold leaf (my sons a custom painter)and the Golden Jubilee hood ornament will be gold plated. I havent searched the archives to see if this question was presented before so forgive me if it was.

I agree you should paint it however you want. It'd be fun to see all the different versions and how they turn out if a bunch of folks did this; kinda like there are no two Harleys alike. Another reason not to go with green, though -- with the two heaadlights sticking out like they do it would probably look like a big frog.

In the past there were some really wild color scheme pictures posted. I recall one painted Green and Yellow like a JD. There was a Rainbow 8N. There were a lot of blue and white like the 2000. There was one that was Red and White but with the colors reversed. None of the old links that I have work though.

I'm surprised that we have not seen a camouflage color scheme yet.

I saw a 2N painted black with orange and yellow flames on it about 4 years ago. He also had the wheel hubs and other items highlighted with orange. It was a pretty cool looking rig and I"m sure he had a lot of fun with it.

My 2N has a red belly scheme which is way wrong for the tractor but that"s what it had when I got it and I like it enough to have repainted it the same scheme.

Bottom line is that it"s your tractor, paint it whatever color you want.

Well if you paint it black then be prepared for it to show every speck of dirt and every small blemish if it has any, and hopefully you never have to sell it. I think the original Ferguson tractor was black (the one before the TO-20). I had a black and yellow Packard once and it was a pain to keep it clean.

The only thing I dont like about my 8n is that some previous owner painted the red parts blue. One of these days I will take care of that. But it is your tractor and paint it how you like. At least your wife doesn't want to paint it pink. ;-)

I'll try the black. If it dont work out, I'll go back to red and grey. I actually like red and grey but I just feel the need to do something different. I'll probably keep this tractor the rest of my life. I got too much invested already to ever recover. My friends wife has a pink Harley. Its only a matter of time till more women discover the fun of antique tractors and want pink ones, my wife included.

Local college has a farmall cub painted purple and gold. Talk about hideous looking. It's not even a pretty shade of purple either. I felt sorry for it the day I saw it. I wanted to rescue it from further embarrasment and get some farmall red on it right away.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Every one was good. I wont be painting till early summer but will post a picture at that time. (when I learn how). It definately won't be green and/or yellow. The American Flag theme sounds unique, but its been done. Maybe black with flames. I'm sure I'll change my mind a dozen times before I make a final decision. Glad to hear the Tractor Paint Police wont be knocking at my door, I'm already in serious trouble with the Mattress Tag Removal Police.

Don, I forgot to mention I live in Concord, New York. We dont get much of a summer around here and I'm in the hills 2500 feet above sea level with a strong breeze 20 to 25 mph almost every day all year long. This week we had temps of -17 with wind chills as low as -55. Summer is about +70 on a good day. But I do understand what you are saying. If I lived in texas I'd paint it white.

In the archives on this site there's one painted grey with the American flag on it looks good but would look better with a maple leaf (lol). Be an original paint it your way.

I've seen green/yellow ( with lawnmower parts added on to boot! ) Tie-die-rainbow colors. And of course the 'gold demonstrator' look, as well as modernizations of 9n/2n to the redbelly scheme.. or blue, or blue/grey combos.

I think any color you like will be nice. I wouldn't wory about a decrease in value.. Good paint of the 'wrong' color is better than bad or no paint.. and like you say.. if the 'next' owner don't like it.. he can blow some new paint on it pretty cheaply.

One hting though.. you DO have to post pics of it once painted!

MY WIFE WANTS TO PAINT MY 8N PINK AND MAKE THE HEADLIGHTS LOOK LIKE EYES WITH EYELASHES STICKING UP AND THE FRONT BUMPER WOULD BE IN THE SHAPE OF A BIG PAIR OF RED LIPS. SO NEEDLESS TO SAY I"M LOOKING FOR ANOTHER N FOR HER TO FIX UP.MY 8N WILL ALWAYS BE A RED BELLY.

I painted my 2N blue and white (Toronto maple Leafs) not so much cause I'm a rabid leaf fan but more because my neighbour is a rabid Boston Bruin fan.

I saw an 8N painted the later model blue/gray once and it was just wrong to me. But it's your tractor and you can paint it pink if you want to.

1bigdad,
I have a Jubilee painted identical to that!
That big red racing stripe down the center of the hood kinda grows on you , doesn't it?
