Lightning Hits Tractor??

Today I discovered my 8N had traveled about 25 feet with the harrow down, hit a pine tree, & chocked down. Key was in ignition but it was turned off. I can only guess that during thunderstorm last night lighting struck tractor or close enought to it that caused it to start. It was running fine yesterday, but had dead battery today. Jumped it off with my truck and first would only click, but after few minutes to charging it would turn over but never made a hint of starting.

I think the lighting caused it to start and in process must have messed my electrical system up and killed my battery. Any opinions out there? What do I need to check in sequence?? Battery, points, celloind?? All help appreciated. Need to get it running this week to clear some land to build a horse barn.

It appears to me that the lightening strike welded the contacts on the electricaly accusionated adrenelyn quencher shut causing the wobble pin to fall out of the wiggling hole thus moving the tractor forward.

This may not be as mysterious as you first think. Some years back when I was responsible for our fleet of Ford school busses, we went to work one morning to find one bus across the parking lot against the school building. The battery was dead. What we discovered was that the starter solonoid shorted out caused the starter to run. The bus had been parked in gear without the parking brake set, the starter pulled the bus along until it hit something and stopped. When the battery was drained, apparently the contacts on the solonoid opened, and after recharging the battery the starter worked ok---for awhile. Later it happened again with the motor running. I would look at getting a new solonoid.

Henry built in a lightening protection device in the N tractors. If you haven't found it yet, its under the gas tank. L8R----Fred OH

My brother used to have a massey fergusson backhoe that we thought was haunted.

Whenever it rained, the lights would turn on.

One of us would gather the courage to go out and turn them off, finding that the switch was still in the off position.

Real scarry till you figure out it was water getting into the switch and completing the circuit.

Not long ago, I read a story about a woman, who saw her tractor hit by lighting, and watched it take off, go across the fence through the field down the ditch and flip over. It may be one of those stories in the archives on the left sidebar, I don't rembmer where. But it does happen. If you had storms and some lightning the 8N would be a good ground/contact point and more than likely, your hunch is real.

Sorry to hear of your mishap. I don't see how lightening could cause tractor to start and then move. Don't happen to have any mischievous kids in the neighborhood do you? Sound to me as though someone started your tractor drove it into the tree, shut it off and ran for home. Think it would be best to remove the key in the future and hang it in a safe place. Just my .02 worth. Mike

To Mike/OH, yes that was my other thought about some kid in the middle of the night doing just that but it did rain all night and now tractor won't start. If a kid did it, it should still be running o.k. which it's not.

Could be you got a distributor that needs drying out. I think the dampness from being left out in the rain is what is causing your problem now. By the way,.....You do have gas in her don't you and it's not shut off at the tank?? Let me know how you make out. Good luck. Mike
