Distributor cap off center?

I have 3 distributor caps... all fit off center along the top, when seated in the alignment hole.

All three have wear in the contact pad for cylinder 1. The newest not to much as I haven't run it much. When turning the newest one, I can feel it catch on the #1 position... (new rotor, old one one was really ate up after just 2-3 weeks or so of use).

Is the cap alignment hole (mates with a pin on the dist cap) on the distributor off?

Or are all three of these caps defective?

All 3 are light brown and look to be from the same manufacturer. One I got at Napa, the other at TSC, the third was on the tractor when I bought it... origin unknown.

Anyone have similar experience or advice?

tia,

jt

I just redid my points and found that the cap would not fit on tight--there was a small gap between the cap and distributor body. Then I rmembered that when I put the points in new two years ago that I had the same problem. The center metal web that guides and supports the rotor shaft is poorly made. In my case, the rotor would not seat all the way down and thus was pushing on the inside of the cap. I took a socket large enough to pass the shaft but seat firmly on the web nose. A few well aimed hits, a little alignment nudges so that the shaft would turn freely, and the cap went on nicely and the end slop that was there was reduced. Yes, I believe the replacement distributor is cheaply made, but it works if necessary alterations are done. It runs fine now, though it looks terrible. We've had so much rain here that the grass is over 3 feet high--and wet. Makes for interesting mowing. My son has a nice JD 4310 with a 6 foot JD shredder. But I still like using the 42 9N with solid wheels and my beatup King Kutter 4 footer. Something about the smooth running of the old flat head 4 that is enchanting to me.

Thanks for the input! I have that gap as well, and my rotor is to high. I'll check that center support asap.

Grass is high here in central Indiana as well, and lots of rain.... 5" in 6 hrs last thursday night... my creek was up 5'!

thanks for the time!

Just a thought -- Why not a bit of creative file (or Dremel tool) work on the distributor so that the cap lines up? After it lines up correctly fill the over size hole with either J-B Weld or an epoxy, then redrill locator hole in correct location.

I'm trying just that... of sorts.

I'm going to take the oldest cap and cut the alignment nub off and then use modeling clay on the contacts and see what if any clearance changes are made with the cap in different positions... hopefully I can find an optimum position and move the alignment hole.

thanks for the thought and time in posting,

jt

As pretty and clean as the distributor looks I am thinking you may have one of the aftermarket foriegn made distributors that are poor quality.

I would just grind off a little of the conductor of the rotor so it won't touch. The rotor can miss the contact of the cap by 1/4" or more and not have any adverse effect on the ignition.

Thanks, the distributor definitely looks to be of a newer manufacture than the rest of my tractor.

I'll try mucking with the rotor end... I have an old one that's already ground down from use.

Same with the rotor off.

It's the guide pin hole in the distributor that seems to be off.
