For whatever it is worth, I have this problem on my TO-30. It does not happen all the time. I have tried to adjust it out and that isn't the answer for me. I have a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and flywheel. I split it to replace the flywheel 'cuz the ring gear came off and neither the pressure plate nor the flywheel showed any signs of rust, oil etc. The splines were clean and the throw out bearing looked andfine and rotated easily.I'd sure like to know what the problem is. I'm beginning to think there is a worn thrust washer in the tranny that is causing the tranny input shaft to move forward and not allowing the clutch to release properly.

jim, i too had this problem about 2 weeks ago. i was fortunate in that it only took a pedal alignment to cure. check the manual. adjusting the threaded linkage to 3/4" free play of clutch pedal may do it for you. in other words, the pedal travel may not be enough to disengage the clutch. good luck.

Jim, I will be curious to see what kind of feed back you get. I too have an 8N that does not always disengage immediatly. I run mine every day and after it has ran in lower gears at a higher RPM the tractor will run another 4-5 feet after I push down the clutch. Does not do it all the time and never when I first run it??? The first time it happened I almost went out the back of the garage! I have tried to adjust it and that does not help???

I think i figured out why the clutch does not disingauge when the clutch pedal is applied.the holes that goes through the clutch pedal to the adjusting screw was to large for the pin that was in the tractor. So i went from a 1/4 to a 3/8 pin that connects the pedal to the clutch adjusting screw and reset the clutch and so far works fine hopes this cures all of our problembs with the 8n clutch .also check for any cracked connections mainly on the bottom of the shaft connection.get under the tractor with a flash light and have someone to push the clutch pedal down and look for any cracks it the clutch connector to the clutch shaft. Thanks for all of the input.Jim M

Just going out on a limb here, but that may just be normal "coasting to a stop" for an N. Remember that these tractors have a lot of inertia and only hitting the clutch without using the brakes is like letting off the gas in a car...you just coast, you're not going to stop anytime soon. You should see the same thing happen when in high gear, only it takes even longer to come to a stop. If you don't get this action in high gear, then there may be something to it. I just learned how far in advance to depress the clutch on my 2N. One of those "must learn" techniques of the farmer, i guess.

My tractor is not coasting when this happens. Hitting the brake while the clutch is down KILLS the engine. The transmission is still engaged for a short time.

Hey Jim. Sounds like you have the same problem I do when mine sits for a while. My Daddy said it probably came from oil or grease getting on the splines or on the pressure plate/disc assembly. I've found if you use it every day -even just a little bit, it does better. Like OLD said, if you'll hold it down when not in use, it'll help a lot. I use the double open wrench that came with the tractor to measure the furrow depth and put it between the clutch pedal and the bracket the pedal comes up against. Just make sure you park it in neutral so if it should accidentally try to start on its own or someone bumps the button, it won't take off! I've had to work on 18 wheelers where the drivers would leave it parked in gear (even with the parking brakes locked!) and it would burn up a starter or worse, run into something. The worst that can happen now is to have to cut the tractor in half and put in a new clutch assembly. Thats not all that bad if you've got good friends who work cheap(i.e. a six pack or two). Good luck and happy tractoring!

Does it do that all the time?? or just after it has set a day or two. If it does it all the time you probably need to adjust it but if it does it after setting a day or 2 try locking the clutch pedel down when not in use
