I have bought two N's now and neither one had thermostats in the upper radiator hose. I went and bought a thermostat but its not shaped like the original and don't know which end to insert first into the upper radiator hose. Do I even need a thermostat? Steam seemed to be coming out of the radiator cap after a couple hours of bush hogging this past summer. But it didn't seem like it was boiling over. Thanks, Mitch

By the way, clean off your radiator about once an hour to lessen the chances of her steaming as quickly. Before spring gets here, take an air hose and go in behind the radiator and see how much you can blow out of it and make sure fan belt is snug but not too tight. Then you have done most all you can do without getting out your checkbook. Put a piece of window screen (metal)over front end-tie to headlights with heavy cord, this helps a good bit. The spring always goes toward the engine on any thermostat. L8R----Fred OH

If you promise to run the tractor for a couple of hours every time you start it a thermostat probably isn't "needed"

All a thermostat does is get the engine up to operating temperature in a reasonable time

If you don't get the engine up to temp you won't boil off any water [condensation] in the oil and eventually you will sludge up the insides

If you have ever taken apart an engine that didn't warm up you wouldn't think of running without one

The thermostat is supposed to keep the engine at optimum operating temperature. A too-cold engine will not support combustion as efficiently. A too-hot engine will cause other obvious problems. The thermostat goes with the copper element end toward the block. Proper functioning is predicated on a healthy radiator, water pump and water jacket.
