saw this picture on e-bay and had a question - why is there a copper line tapped into the air pipe leading to the carb?

I think what some one may have done is taken a dist. from a 1940 to 1948 FORD flat head V8 they had a front mount dist. the castings looked the same but for the vacuum advance pot, and then some how made it work on the N series tractor. The V8 dist. has dual points in it and the cap has 8 nipples on it but the tractors 4 place will fit on the casting but then there is the rotor thing to work out. I can't remember what that looked like on the V8. Just a guess. Dave.

That tractor is interesting because of the Steel wheels. The fact that it has steel wheels leads you to beleive it's a wartime 2n, however, he says that it's a 1941 which would make it a 9N. Combining that with the fact that there is a generator, no permanently attatched hand crank (as the war models had), nor the hole for the choke in the grill, it leads me to beleive that this is a 9N that somebody just put steel wheels on for kicks. That's odd because most people would not spend the money to get steel wheels unless they wanted to go back to original (certainly not for the comfortable ride!) and the 9N just doesn't fit. Sorry about being OT, but i'm just thinking out loud.

Could there possibly have been some sort of ether deal rigged up, to help on cold mornings? I've driven a few Peterbilts that had an ether button on the dash.

Weird...

2 GUESSES come to mind... either something is being injected into the system ( nitrous?!! naaaa... or even extra airflow from a low volume pump? )

Or they might be using manifold vacume for something... don't know past that.

souNdguy,

Maybe someone tried to copy the same crankcase ventilation system as used on your new Cub? It depends where the tube leads. A line runs from the intake tube to the crankcase of the Cub. The intake tube has a slight vacuum, due to the resistance of the air cleaner. It looks like a good idea.
