Does radiator antifreeze need to be changed and how often? What if you don't?
Thanks for your opinions.

Texaco makes a five year anti-freeze. Probably expensive.

If you really want to know if your coolant is corrosive or acidity, take volt meter, set to DC mv, touch one probe to tank and suspend other probe in antifreeze. A digtal volt meter works best. If their is a marginal volt reading you need to add an inhibator. If you use the older style volt meter, you may need to switch leads to get the right polarity. I have seen a volt meter read up to 2 volts on some car radiators. Back when raditors was metal!

I have heard something to that effect before, but thought it was just hipe to get you to buy more antifreeze. I have an aluminum radiator in my 40 Ford and was told to change the antifreeze every 2 or 3 years as it builds up a charge and then does some goofy stuff to the aluminum. Have had the car on the road for 11 years now and have only changed the antifreeze a couple times, and that was because I changed out the hoses, so decided to put in fresh antifreeze. I don't see anything wrong inside the radiator, so go figure.

hey bill, you really need to change your antifreeze; about every 3 years or so. it will always maintain its "antifreeze" properties as long as you don't dilute it. but, it WILL lose it's lubrication and, especially important, its anti-rust capability. i suppose you could always add lubricant and anti-rust chemicals; they are available. but i feel better flushing and replacing to get the "crap" out of there.

I have had the same antifreeze in my TO 20 Ferguson since 1965 and it was down to +10% last week and did fine. I check it along with all my other vehicles and it is alway down to about 0% like the rest.

Bill, I believe permanent anti-freeze will last for years. I do believe that it's additives wears out though. What I do is add water pump lubricant to the radiator once a year. I have used antifreeze for 5 years without any problems.
