Is the 1 gallon reserve a myth?

I have two 8N's. For normal running, I open the gas cut-off valve 2 turns; when they run out of gas, I open the valve all the way, and try to restart the engine on the "1 gallon reserve". I can see gas in the tank. Never works. Are both valves bad, is something clogged.....or is the 1 gallon reserve a myth?!

Bruce, your valve has dirt in it.the valve has a STAND PIPE for the 9 gal and reserve has hole at bottom of valve. after time takes its toll on gas tank and non-filter gas (dirt clay dust grass and anything else you can think of ) is in this little hole on valve. then you run out of gas try to use reserve and no workee
1-best tip is: use reserve now and then helps get junk out of it
2-this junk shows up in glass bowl then
3-happy tractoring BOB

While I had my hood off last month, I decided to clean the fuel bowl.. and notice dhte cork gasket dry rotted... I monkied with that for hours trying to get it to stop leaking.. I must have cut half a dozen cork gaskets... finally used some heavy gasket paperboard and made one and it works fine...

We must use the same thing; I've had it around the place for years. I make my oil plug gaskets out of it. I've got a sheet of cork, but it bunches up or breaks too easily.

...used the reserve (worked very well) and ran out of gas and walked (forgot to close the reserve after filling up). I just rescently saw a vendor selling shut-off valves that look like the N model but don't have the reserve. The knob is different and does not say "open two turns...". I won't buy those. The other thing is, you have to wait a minute or so after going to reserve for the carb bowl to fill up before you try to start the engine. I usually open it up and then walk around the tractor for a visual inspection. When I get back on, it (she) is ready to go.

The reserve function on my valve works exactly as advertised. Sure beats walking back to the house!

I think the others are right -- your valve is dirty.

and of course if you wait to clean it out until you're down to that "last gallon"....you won't have a "last gallon" left to use anyway!! It'll just be another "dead spot" in the field you'll have to blame on the red ants! And how well the "last gallon" concept works is most definitely proportionate to how darn far away from the house you are.....or....how far you have to walk when the tractor finally dies! I've found that its infinitely easier to take the old graduated fuel level checking wrench out of the toolbox occassionaly and check on the progress of the fuel expenditure. Not only does this prepare you for that trip back to the garage to refuel...but it gives you a very good feel for proper carburator and timing settings.....of course I'm more accustomed to listening to the tractor running under a constant load while ploughing or disking....so maybe my situation doesn't apply here.

Someone posted the measurements to make your own stick,,,out of a paint stir-stick,,,must be in the archives somewhere. Wood is non-sparking. Bob in NY.

hehehe..... ..that's exactly what my ex-wife kept hoping!!!!! Did I forget to say "carefully"?....and that's nothing compared to all the rust, dirt, whole white bread, and oil that ends up in the gas tank from all that measuring!!!! of course.....it helps if you wipe the wrench off after each measurement either with your shirt tail, handkerchief, or remnants of the two dozen burlap sacks you got stacked in the seat to cushion the blows! Ok...ok....I'll get a damn stick too..... there goes a little more excitement from my life!!!! hehehe....now I know why most accidents in America.....happen on the family farm!!!!!

If the tractor ever sat long enough for all the gas to evaporate from the tank, it is practically guaranteed that the separate opening in the valve assembly for the reserve fuel is clogged with varnish. You have to remove and disassemble the float bowl and valve assembly to fix this. It isn't too hard to clean out the passage with a 1/8 inch drill bit (turn it by hand). Then the challenge is getting the bowl back on and the valve back in such that neither leaks.

Dave,
That's my fear, as I suffer from the same problem. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to clean it, if I can't seal it up proper afetrward.

The "reserve" goes through a different hole in the sediment bowl which is not filtered, so the hole for the reserve portion may be clogged with rust, dirt or something else. Take the whole thing off and apart and give it a good cleaning.

Probably the filter at the top of the sediment bowl assembly is partially clogged. Most likely if you remove and clean that, it will work ok again. Of course you'd want to do so when you only have minimum gas in the tank to make less mess.
