A friend just picked up a ford tractor.
The axle housings have #'s stamped on them that start with 2N
The engine # (can't make out the first #s)
but it looks like N25050.
It has the classic 9n 2n features,(6 blade fan,
3 speed, brake pedals on separate sides, front dist.
It also has an emblem below the ford emblem on the grille that says (Fergeson system)
Is there any other way to find the year??

Thanks J.O.

Maybe. Your serial number should start with a 9 (in front of the N). Maybe there's another digit hiding at the end of the serial number (?). You can be sure you have all the digits if you can see a star in front of the 9 and another star after the last digit.

Other clues: If it still has the original hood emblem, look under the Ford and see if there's a tiny "2N" cast there. Look at the radius arms. Are they oval? If so it looks more like it's a 2N. If they are I-beam style it's either a 9N or a very early 2N. Here's a link to help you zero in on the age of your tractor.

Year Starting Serial Number 1939 1 1940 10234 <<<<<<<
1941 45976 1942 89888 1943 105412

IF YOU GOT ALL THE NUMBERS, THEN YOU HAVE A 1940..

The axel housings where you've found the 2N digits will have a date stamped into the casting. (For ex: 9-7-46) That will give you an approximate date of production.

Date would be a letter folowed by numbers. Smith Tractor gives an example of G187. The G would stand for July: seventh letter in the alphabet. 18 would be day: 18th. 7 would be the year: 47

You are right about the date being a letter followed by numbers, but on the rear axel, there is a date coded MM/DD/YR. My 2n has 3-15-47 cast into the rear axel.
