Is it time for a new battery?

Just finished plowing snow - man I got to build some skids for the blade!

But here is my problem:

While plowing, I was running the lights. About 15 minutes into it, I noticed the lights were out. Being that it was close to dusk, I didn't notice if they went out all at once, or if they faded. So, I turned off the light switches and kept plowing.

When I was done, I turned on the lights and they came on at about 3/4 brightness. I surmized that the lights had drained the battery and that leaving the engine run put juice back inbto the battery. I turned off the engine, and tried to start it again. Nothing - no crank.

Is this a battery problem, or should I be fooling with that adjusting screw on the generator?

Ed, It could be that your lights were drawing too much current for the generator to handle or it could be that your battery isn't holding the charge very good.
I would recommend you charge up the battery, pull it out and get it checked with a load applied.
If it dosent hold, or shows bad, replace it.
It it is good, put it back in and run your N with the lights on and watch the ammeter to see if it continues to show a charge.. If it dosent't show charge, you may need to "tweek" the 3rd brush screw a tad.
Don't over do it tho;
I think you should be throwing about 8-10 amps into the battery (I'm sure someone will say for sure), but if there isn't enough to power your lights, they will drain the battery. Good luck.

Make sure your generator belt is not slipping should be your first step. Measure across the + & - posts of the battery. Running should show an increase of at least 1 volt over static voltage. ray
