Hey Greg. There's been a merger of a couple of major backbone providers (the companies who provide the Internet "super highway" that most ISP's utilize). They have also been upgrading equipment. The combination of the two events has resulted in performance problems in many locations, regardless of how you connect to the Internet (dial-up, DSL, etc.)

I was having the same problem. Performance kept
getting worse over a period of months. Difficult
connections and dropouts. Turned out my modem was
dying a slow death. Finally my phone went dead and found out the problem was the modem.

Could be a router or switch is down in your area. If you know how to use DOS, open up a command window and at the prompt type in tracert ytmag.com to see how many hops and the amount of time it takes. It should give you an idea of where the problem is if one hop times out or takes very long.

Hey Mike,

I tried what you said. It took probably 30 seconds or so. It shows 18 lines of text with three colums of numbers with an "ms" next to them and then some kind of name and Ip looking number.

My question is, when the trace got to the bottom of the screen, the stuff at the top of the screen was bumped up above the windows view. How do you scroll up or down in DOS or do you just have to read fast enough before it goes off screen.

I use a dialup ISP and the icon usually says 45,333bps. I went to one of those websites that does a test on the connection speed and its usually just above 40,000bps. The only strange thing about my connection is that when it is wet outside or a storm moves in within 30 or 50 miles or so, it will connect down around 30,000bps and disconnect often. On a clear day it works great.

Thanks Darrel.

Oh Mike if I started messing around with stuff like that I'd bring the whole Internet down - lol.

Thanks for the advice but I don't know enough about DOS to mess with it. Besides I have Windows XP and I don't think DOS has anything to do with that (or vice versa), or am I wrong?

XP still has a DOS program built into it. Go to Start>Run and type command. You can still access most of the DOS features that way-handy in a network environment. Guess I still am a DOS junkie at heart...

Greg, XP needs a modem driver for the cheapo devices. I lost my good modem (lightling) and am back to a HSP56 which shares CPU time.(Yet to find a XP driver). Best to buy a "full Time" Modem.

Hello Greg,

Haven't talked with you lately. I had a terrible time with slow connections, bump-off's and a difficult time getting connected with America on Line... But when I changed to Leapfrog everything has worked "instantly" and it's much less expensive and uses much less memory to operate.

Kind regards.

My ISP sent me an email that said other people were complaining about the slow DSL. The ISP said that it was something out there in cyberland that was causing it and so I was wondering if anyone else was having problems.

No, nothing like that here - although DSL isn't available. There was a problem here about two months ago when someone with a backhoe dug up an optical cable in Abilene, Texas but that was repaired in a few hours. We don't have access to DSL here because the Looney-Tunes telephone company still uses barbed-wire for telephone lines.
