Is 8N second gear really weak?

Is Second Gear on the 8N really a weak gear that fails often due to design? Or is it that Second Gear is used so often because it seems to give a perfect speed to run at and keep the 1500rpm PTO speed needed for most equipment, therefore it is the one that gets broken most often?
Thanks for any opinions!

Thanks for all the comments. After reading about Second Gear numerous times on the Board I had to ask. The concenses seems to be that Second Gear is the most used gear in brush hogging. Which is one of the most used features of the 8N. So, it seems that the Second Gear may not be weak as suggested many times, but is instead the most used gear, thereby the one most replaced.
Maybe we put a myth to rest. Thanks again everybody!

I have been fixing N tractors and others for over fourty years. I have fixed probably 40 four speed transmissions in Ford tractors. 39 had the second gear broken while bush hogging in second gear.

What do you think this should tell you ????? ????

Wonder how many of those didn't have ORC's?

Interesting!

That tells me darn near everybody bush hogs in second gear. If everybody bush hogged in third gear you would have been changing 39 third gears.

Whether it is because it is weak by design or because it gets abused the most, it is worth noting that second gear is the only gear the after market parts suppliers have bothered to make replacements for.

Your mileage may vary

It's my understanding that 2nd gear has a smaller/weaker bearing/shaft (or something) than the rest of the forward gears, this is not a problem inless your bush hog'n, if you hit a large rock/stump, the shock can and will transfer up the pto shaft breaking 2nd gear.

In other words "Don't hog in 2nd !!"

Correct. Wouldn't a ORC help with the shock after running into that baseball glove/stump?

Tyler, My Bush hog has a stump jumper. Do I need a base ball glove jumper to? Or will the stump jumper handle it?
If you want a real fun time , find some fence wire with the bush hog. Or a slinky. Need a pair of Sweed side cutters to handle that.

Tyman is spot on....just use common sense and an ORC when mowing and things will be ok..If not parts are available to fix it..... ...Big Mike

I believe it's been determined that 2nd gear is the one that's used more often than the others. I'd use it and not worry about it. Just use common sense and treat your tractor with care and you'll be fine.
