Lights 6 volt or 12 volt best
I have a 1952 8N 6 volt system with no lights. I want lights but have been reading some posts and there is suggestions that the 6 volt lights are not as good as the 12 volt lights, does anybody have experience with this.
Thanks

Its 10:00 and I just came in from grading my back yard in the dark with nothing but my 2 front 6v headlights. Not the brightest, but they let me see where I'm going. The problem is I'm usually looking behind me at the blade so I really need to see where I came from!

John,
Ditto. I snowplow in the winter with 2 6v lights front and rear. Not bright, but better than moonlight. There are more lamp choices in 12 volt (i.e. if the standard ones are not bright enough, you can find brighter). I wouldn't do a 12 volt upgrade just for headlamps. If you do the upgrade for other reasons, 12v will obviously be better. Expense wise, it's cheaper to just put 6v lights on, especially if it seldom used (as mine are).

If you are already at 6 volt don't change just for the lights unless you use them A LOT at night. I snowplow a long driveway with mine at night during the winter and have no problem with the 6 volt lights (2 front, 1 rear). However, if I did A LOT of night work it might be worth it to convert the tractor. But if you already have a 6 volt system and only occasionally use the lights, stick with 6 volt.

What Ken says. I have a 6 v car and several 6 v tractors. If u have no problems otherwise, don't swap to make the lights brighter on the tractor, as they will be bright enough for that purpose. And finding bulbs is not a problem.

Hi John,
I dont have any tractor light experience to pass along but do have a couple of old 6v cars. The headlights are pretty wimpy compared to the 12v lights on cars these days. There is nothing like having some jerk ride your tail casting a shadow of your car in front of you. Slowing down usually helps :-) I bet you wont be on the interstate though. I wouldn't do the 12v swap just for a few lumens. If your 6v setup works, run with it.
Ken
