I have a '48 or so 8n. Runs good except for not having oil pressure when it warms up. Also it's leaking oil out both rear seals (I've tried tightening). The kingpin bushings are rather sloppy as well. I couldn't get a reliable day,s work out of it last summer because the engine would cut out whenever I went up the hill. Tried cleaning the sediment bowl and fuel tank. Had to borrow my friends' Kubota to finish working my corn. No crops this year until fall. Should I try to fix this thing? How much time and enrgy should I have to put out? I'm fairly mechanically literate and have an IT manual.

Thanks for the replies and the helpful advice. I'll tackle the Ford again (and forego the Kubota!). I'll probably be back asking questions later. This is a very helpful forum!

Don't waste your time. It's more trouble than it's worth. Buy a Kubota. Send the 8N to me.

My 47 2N sounds like it was in similar condition when I started on it. Very low oil pressure and smoked when warmed up. Various leaks, etc. I wound up rebuilding the entire engine (very easy to do even for a mechanical novice like me). I could have cut some corners but I elected to "do it right" and replaced everything. Total bill was around $1200 including all of the machine shop work. Another $800 in paint, sandblasting and "incidentals" and I have a tractor that I would put up against a new one any time. It also has the advantage of being simple to work on and very reliable. My personal opinion, as long as you have the time and the desire to do it right, I would keep the N.

Dan, The rear oil seal are not that diffcult to replace. Order brake shoes at the same time. A weak link in the electrical system is the key switch. Might try replacing it as they are know to heat up and than short out.

Can't help you with the king pins. I've got know idea of how hard or expensive a job this will be.

Well that is my FREE ADVICE. Remember you get what you pay for. (grin)
