I have noticed something on my 8N (front mount distributor) from the beginning of owning it. It was going on before I did a major overhaul (and that part is working great) and it does it now.. At top speed while I'm workinking every once and a while, I will hear the exhaust go "plut plut"
Doesn't bother it any, Just wondering if anyone else has this happen, and if so, any ideas why?

I've experienced that with my '47 8N. At first, I thought it was missing, but actually I have a slight exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. Maybe that's all that is happening with yours.

I think Evil Steve is right.....it's occasionally misfiring....check the distributor bushings for play....

Take Care

What you are hearing is misfiring (what a lot of people wrongly say is backfiring [which is aslo incorrect as backfire means through the carb - AFTERfire is what comes out exhaust]).

Anyway, this is typical of the N, but here are some things you can do to reduce/eliminate the problem (in addition to having everything tuned up properly):

Use copper core plugs wire, not standard off-the-auto-store-stuff. Keep wires away from each other as much as possible. What happens is arcing from wire to wire or to other grounds causing weak/no spark. If you run the tractor for awhile in complete darkness, you will even see some tiny sparks flying across the wires.

Re-check timing too when engine is warm (4 BTDC).

Morning, thanks for that info, I will try the plugs. I have my wires seperated with auto wire looms rather tha using the tube..so I don't think that's the problem.

Your welcome. You didn't say what kind of wires you are using though. Another thing that happendd to me you might check: I've found that the rotors have a comparatively weak spring (mine even tore almost all the way off where it connects with the brass dist contact point. And this rotor was less than 100 hours old.

I was having intermitent misfiring where I'd had none before. Went thru my entire ignition checklist and was baffled until I happened to have the rotor in my hand and was absentmindedly pressing the spring down with my thumb while contemplating my next move. Replaced it and no more miss. Sometimes the simplest things cause problems.

I'll check that too.. the wires and rotor were from the New Holland/Ford dealership, suppose to be good, or at least we would like to think that. I'll crank er up N the dark too, and C what I can see.
