Because I did it just as Dave-NJ did. I replaced mine before I found this board so I didn't even think about removing the manifold. I just worked around it. I even cut out my own cork gaskets using the old ones as a template.

I replaced mine about a month ago, didn't pull the manifold. The one in the back was easy, but the one in the front was tight because of the carb and linkage. Before replacing the front cover I removed the carb and the link from the gov; still a little tight, but no big problem, and they don't leak. Dave...

It can be done if you use the right magic words and are double jointed. Give yourself half a chance and drop the exhaust pipe and the carb. Clean off all loose dirt around the area. It will be difficult to clean the gasket surface without knocking dirt into the cavity. You are only four brass nuts away from having more room to work.

I reckon you could do it, but I don't think the hassle of trying to work around the manifold would be worth it. You have to clean the block where the gasket mounts. I'd be inclined to pull the manifold, replace the gaskets and adjust the valves while I had the plates off.
