Is it possible to get drain oil out of a trcctor into a pan and into a container without making a mess?

My experience is no! I got it out of the tractor and into the drain pan without incident and was feeling confident I could then pour it out of the pan through a funnel into a 5 gallon container.Just to be on the safe side I went outside and very carefully started pouring into the can.Was almost halfway done without spilling a drop when this chipmunk ran out from under the shed and across my feet.Needless to say I was startled because I had been concentrating on pouring the oil and Im sure you can then imagine the oil sloshing all over the place.Im going to get it right next time but for now at least my tennis shoes wont rust.Sometimes I think I would create less of a mess if I just drained the oil directly onto the garage floor. Is it just me or has anybody else had an incident with a drain pan full of oil?

Yes, it's possible. Someone here on the board drilled and tapped their transmission drain plug with a smaller bolt. I did the same to my crankcase drain plug putting a 3/8" plug in the center of the original plug. Works great, though it drains a bit more slowly. However, that extra time can be used to stand back and drink a beer .....

I took a plastic 5-gallon container (the kind that comes free with paint, driveway sealer, bird seed, and about a hundred other things, or sells for 5 bucks empty at Home Depot) and cut it down to just the right height to fit under my 8N (with enough room for my hand and a wrench). It has enough capacity to hold all the drain oil from the engine, and more than enough for any one of the three drains under the transmission and rear end.

When it's full, I use a 6-inch funnel and carefully pour the oil into a 5-gallon container with a cover, where it's ready for recycling. Not one drop on the driveway!

Oh, I forgot the most important part. Do all this on the lawn when your wife isn't looking; in a week, point out the dead spots and complain loudly about what the damned neighbor dogs did.

Hey Ellwood...if I remember correctly, you posted a photo of your tractors not too long ago. I've been thinking about that since then...mostly when I'm in the shower or drinking beer; but I have to tell you something. I just met a guy about 45 minutes from here. He has 9 tractors...all Fords and Fordson's. And I thought about your photo...and thought some more and thought about his comment. It's gotten to the point where he just brings them home...and ask's for forgiveness later (from his wife). She has gotten to the point where she doesn't ask, expects it, and just throws her hands up in the air. Is that your secret too? I'm thinking about a third tractor...but I'm also thinking about staying married. Maybe I'll go take a shower and dwell on it and wash this oil off of me. 9N'er

Getting the 3rd tractor is the easy one. That is the tractor for the wife, she wont want anything to do with it so you will end up with it anyhow.Afterall it was the thought that counts.Im to the point where my wife already has 2 tractors!

I chuckled at these posts about reaching nirvana, the shame of a Farmall Cub, and convincing the wife she needs her own tractor. To be honest I tried that one...all I got was an askance look and a firm "NO we don't need another tractor!" But then I told her that my goal was to have a tractor per acre, and have a representative model for each type of Ford Tractor produced. That means we need a restored NAA, 8N, and a Thousand Series...and said we're close to almost half-way. I spent the rest of the night eating cold cuts and cleaning a radiator by myself....she wasn't too excited when I showed her how clean it was. I made her breakfast the following morning.

And eventually you reach the state of nirvana where you can bring another tractor home and your wife doesn't notice it.

He's right. I am on the horns of that dilemma right now. She won't drive the Ford - scared of scratching the paint. She won't drive the Farmall - too big, no power steering. So now, she wants

A Farmall Cub!

Oh, the shame of it!

What do you mean "when I'm in the shower OR drinking beer"? Do you keep these tasks separate?

I drained the rear differential, the center housing, and the oil pan today. Needless to say, the EPA is on their way to New Hampshire, and I gave up trying to wear rubber gloves, and keep my arms, pants, and shoes free from oil and fluid.

Tried draining it without a spill but made a mess. Tried carrying the rubber container to a better spot to pour it, and made a trail of fluid and oil.

Tried pouring it, but Wimpy and Piebald came barelling through the yard knocking into my legs in their play (they are dogs...I don't name my kids with those names!)and I spilled it over the 6 gallon containers. You have a timely yet good question...for the short answer: NO.

ROFL ! Elwood ! ,You kill me man LOL about the time I read "A chipmunk ran out from under the shed and across my feet" is about the time I knocked all my CD's off the computer desk from laugh'n !!!! (-: Ha!!

Anyway, this was my cure for oil changes, the pic says it all, this way I can drain oils into several containers without makeing a mess (Most of the time)
It's also a good way to drain off any water that might get into the oil.

later(still laugh'n) dave ps- almost forgot..... ."Belch"
