I am going to look at a 8N next weekend. Here is how it is decribed.
*New tires front and rear.
*Overhauled last year everything put in it. Over size pistons, rings, bearings, ect.
*New clutch
*New brakes
*No rust,or bents in sheet metal.
*Rims good
*Converted to 12v.
*paint faded
I was just wondering what a fair price would be? The owner says it is a very good tractor and runs great. Said he bought a Kabota and doesn't use it anymore.
He told me to come look at it and make him a offer? Whats a fair resonable offer? Whats too low and Whats too high?
Thanks...

Original 8N engine had steel (tin can) sleeves. Many of these were replaced with cast iron sleeves requiring reboring. Problem with tin can sleeves was fast wear under heavy pulling conditions.

Josh, what would bother me is why does it have oversized pistons and rings?? If the engine was overhauled correctly it should have been re-sleeved which would of used standard pistons and rings. I know i've heard of people pulling the sleeves and reboring the block but I wouldn't want one that had been done that way.

I just bought a 50 8n a few months back. The owner was asking 3000, got him down over the phone to 2750 because of minor dry rot on tires, then when I went to hear it run got him down to 2500 because of a manifold leak on #4, It was what I was expecting to pay. Tractor is in very good condition.(I repaired the leak new gasket & a small amount of j-b weld) no emplements

Hey Josh, I'm with Dell it's probably gonna be expensive he's spent alot of money on it sounds like and he's gonna wanna get his money back out of it plus some probably, if it's in good shape which it sounds like it is $3500 would be the very high end for me (but then again I dont buy running tractors lol) I'd rather look for one for bout $1000-1200 and do all the repairs myself but thats what I do whole lot more fun.

Josh..... ..with over $500 in new tires and $1500 in engine overhaul, the gentleman will probably be very insulted with $3000 offer, I would.

He probably thinks its worth $4000 min, cuz after all good runnin' 8N's go for 'round $2000-2500 and he probably gotts receipts for $2500 worth of stuff. But the thing is, unless you originally got the tractor for well under $1000, you can't re-coupe your mechanical investments. The market just isn't there. 'cuz $4000 starts serious tractors with bells and whistles, like live PTO and live and remote hydraulics, power steering, major hp (what some consider 8N faults)

What's it worth to you? At least you are doing your "homework"..... ...Dell

Well, dont know if this helps, but... I bought a running '48 8N with Sherman step up transmission in Tennessee for 700.00. It had no implements (still doesnt...), and the engine needed rebuilding, bad.

Josh, I bought my 51 8N this past summer for $2100. Runs just fine, but doesn't hold the hydraulics up once the tractor is turned off. Paint wasn't bad but had a lot of dents and dings in the sheet metal. 12v conversion was incorrectly done and I have since put about $150 or so in returning it to the original 6v setup Tires were decent on tread, but pretty dry with some cracking. Came with a rear scoop attachment.

People around here seem to think I could have turned around and sold it before even getting it home and made a couple hundred profit. Anyway, just thought I would give you some info to think about and work with while looking at your possible purchase. What year is that one anyway? Just curious.

No that is not it. The one I am looking at is for sale by owner. He isn't advertising it anywhere.

Josh, If I were looking at this tractor the only thing that would turn me off is the 12V conversion. Try to find out why this was done? Sometimes it is to hide other problems. Price....
for me here in Wisconsin $2000.00 would be a steal. More than likley $2500.00 to $3000.00 would be good for you and him.

I agree 2500- 3000 would be fair, I diagrre on the conversion the old 6 volt systems are hard starters when the temp gets below 0 also if the conversion was done right it will be better in the long run as you can add extra lights on back for night work also if you are like me I use mine by the road in the winter so I have flashers on mine. Try running three lights and two flashers on a 6 volt system, never happen without running battery low.

Is using a 12V system hard on the Starter?
Someone told me it would burn it up?
