Is my tractor an 8N?

The serial nr. is *8N23509*, but it has the distribuor in front, 6 blades on the cooling fan, three gears forward. This is more like the spec. I have read of the 9 or 2.
(The tractor and I live in Norway, possibly the tractor was a part of the Mashall help program after WW2?)

I may have the reverse situation. I recently purchased what was listed as a '49 8N but it's serial number is *9N276757 (trailing star missing) It has the markings of an 8N (both brake pedals on right, 4 speeds) but the S/N is clearly marked 9N which would make it a '47 2N engine.

Is it possible someone would have swapped in an older engine?

Maybe Helge and I should swap engines then everything would match!

Jon

Look at the number on the starter housing. It will be more likely to be original. R.M. In AL.

Helge,

Here's the conflicting data for you:

1. The serial # that you list is for an engine from a 1947 8N.

2. All N tractors up to 1950 (I think) had front mounted distributors.

3. 3 gears forward was used on 9Ns and 2Ns. 8N had 4 gears forward.

Are both of your brake patals on the same side or one on each side. 8N had both brake petals on the same side. 9N/2N had one petal an each side. There are casting marks on various part of the tractor that will help you identify the year of the parts. If you find these, post back and the folks here can identify.

Sounds like you have a 9N or 2N with a late 47 or early 48 8N engine. These engines are interchangable. Sidemount dist. started in 50.
Here is a link for you.
