A friend has an 8n with a bushog to cut fields. The only way I can get the bushog to lift up is to have it in gear ( blades running ) what is the problem, or is it supposed to be that way? I'm new to tractors.

SInce you say you are new to tractors, nowadays the hydraulics on tractors as well as the ptos are live - meaning they work independantly. On the N series tractors, the PTO drove the hyd pump.

The PTO must be engaged to operate the lift hydraulics. The PTO also operates the hog blades. Lift the hog, then disengage the PTO. The hog will stay raised and the hog blades will stop. Never lower the hog on your wife's flower bed, or her flowers, and you, will be "history" the next time you lift your hog!

Mac, I mis-understood the ? . The Pto must be engaged for the hyd. to work. But the transmission it shouldn't matter. You should be able to leavethe trans. in neutral and still work the hyd. lift as long as the pto is engaged.

MAC, The 8N has PTO driven hydraulics, this means that the PTO shaft needs to be turning in order to work the hydraulic pump. When traveling and not in the field, I simply disconnect the mower shaft, leave the PTO on and therefore use the lift. When in the field cutting, there is no way around it. Pete

There is no problem here that is the way she is made. Also make sure he has on orc (over run coupler)> It attaches to the pto on the 8N. It will allow you to STOP. Search the archives for more info. on an (orc). It could be very dangerous to run one without.
