May be someone can explain this one. I have a 1948 8N with the 6V system. We have burned up 2 coils in under a year on this tractor. So we put on a new wiring harness since the old one was jury-rigged and I believe was still the original. We also installed a coil resistor. The tractor started great for awhile but for the last week or so we could not get it to turn over. However, when you connect the wires that went directly to coil resistor, the tractor starts right up. We went ahead and got another new resistor but then the tractor will not start. Again, connect the wires directly and it starts right up. I've checked the coil resistor and it is the right part number for this model. Is this going to be a problem? Am I likely to burn up the coil again? Thanks for you help!!!

If you did not have a ballast resistor in series with the coil, it is understandable that you burned them up. You need to take a voltage reading at the top of the coil terminal when the points are closed. You should get in the vecinity of 3 - 3.5 volts. If your reading is considerably less, short out the ignition switch and take a reading again. These old switches are known for building up resistance as crud accumulates on the wiper surfaces. Happy Motoring
