MY 8N WON'T CRANK FROM THE STARTER SWITCH.I'VE PUT A NEW SWITCH ON IT NEW WIRE TO THE SOLENOID AND TRIED A NEW SOLENOID. THE SOLENOID I PUT ON WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL.IT HAS THE 2 POST LIKE THE ONES USED ON FORD CARS.I CAN JUMP FROM THE 2 BIG POST AND IT TURNS OVER AND STARTS FINE BUT IT'S KIND OF INCONVENIENT TO HAVE TO CARRY JUMPER CABLES AROUND ON THE TRACTOR. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

There was a post here a few days ago dealing with the solenoid. The N solenoid is the grounded type and the newer auto type will not work. The N starts by grounding the solenoid. Cars use voltage applied across the solenoid. Someone will confirm or deny this I am sure.

The two small terminals on the solenoid can be two configurations:

(1) Both ends of the solenoid coil are brought out to a small terminal.
One small terminal is connected to the starter switch (which switches to ground when pressed). The other small terminal goes to the battery. Use a small jumper wire to connect it to the battery terminal of the solenoid.

(2) One small terminal is one end of the solenoid coil. The other end of the soleniod coil is internally connected to the large battery termninal. If the battery and starter cables are reversed (solenoid turned half way around) the solenoid will not work. Try turning your solenoid around.

And

The other small terminal has battery voltage on it, only when the soleniod is energized, and is used to bypass an ignition ballast resistor for hotter spark and easier starting.

Get some clip leads, a battery and a volt-Ohm meter and do some checking to see which type of solenoid that you have.

In the original 8N solenoid, the soleniod coil is internally connected to the battery terminal (which is why turning it half way around will not let it work) and the the single small terminal is connected to the start switch which connects to ground and actuates the solenoid.

Hope this helps

Good explanation-concise,easy to understand and easy to follow. Great help to anyone having solenoid problems. With this info you can trace a lot of other starting problems!
